“Brilliant stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

We had been here before a few years ago and had a pleasant time apart from the party and very loud Led Zeppelin type live band that they didn't warn us about when we booked, but which we eventually decided to join in with and had a good time! I checked this time and we had a wonderful , peaceful stay. Charlestown is on the edge of St Austell but is a world away, having a picturesque harbour, complete with square rigged sailing boats and a small beach with access to the coast path and cliffs for a bracing walk. You might need that to walk off the excellent evening meals and breakfasts provided. It may not be Michelin standard but it is more varied and interesting than the usual pub food, with good portions and excellent value. The decor includes lots of nautical references in a modern setting, which works surprisingly well.
We stayed in one of the rooms (called 'Gig') which was very spacious for two( having a sofa and en suite with bath), very comfortable bed, and good facilities.
The staff were all helpful and friendly and we will certainly come again. We might even aim for their next live band event!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front might have a glimpse of the sea.

“Didn't stay here - but the evening meal was superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

Six of us visited this pub for dinner during our stay in St Austell recently - it was recommended by the staff at the hotel we stayed in. Charlestown was very quaint and this pub was a real gem! The staff and service were excellent on what was a very busy Friday evening, and the choice of food was fantastic with a handful of well chosen and delicious-sounding specials. Between us we ate the steak and ale pie (yummy) the rack of lamb, the lamb curry, the lasagne and the 'smaller portion' rump steak. The unanimous view was that the food was superb - hot, fresh and delicious. A couple of our party also had starters, of the goats cheese and the pate. Also very well received. Most of us were disappointed that we couldn't fit in a dessert - but a couple of our party managed a banoffee pie and the sticky toffee pudding. Again, all clearly homemade and very nice.
We ate the previous evening at another restaurant close by, and this was streets ahead of that one and we wished we had visited here twice instead. Really highly recommended for food and dinner and we will definitely return if we visit the area again.

“Great food - Very friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

Very good, high quality food which is all locally sourced.
There is a good choice of locally caught fish, sea-food, meats and veggie options with some innovative ideas.
The staff are very friendly and flexible as, for instance, we wanted whitebait as a starter but as a sharing platter between a few of us as opposed to just a starter. We also, on other occasions, have received a smaller portion of a main dish for an older person. Nothing is too much effort

“Great value pub food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

We have eaten here several times,as we live nearby and it is consistently very good. Prices are fair and the food is good pub fayre without being gastro in any way. Good range of beers from St Austell brewery and often a guest ale from elsewhere. Friendly, efficient staff who do well in a very busy environment especially on a Sat night. Going to try the carvery on a Sunday soon.
I have not stayed here.

“To put in politely ~ Room for improvement”

I have had two meals here. The second one was complimentary as the first meal was so poor.
It didn't improve the second visit either. I would suggest you look carefully at the ingredients which are, according to the Menu, in the dish. On both my visits some ingredients were missing. For example a dish containing walnut and pear you would expect to have some pear ! A dessert containing ginger ~ again, no ginger. In addition I would expect the first course dishes to be removed before the dessert was served. Not on this occasion !!! Although some reviews in TA are complimentary I would suggest you, look and taste, carefully. I'm sure some dishes do meet customer expections but my experience my meals were boardering on being in breach of 'Trade Description Act 1968'
