“Disappointing and overated !”

My boyfriend paid for a one night break to celebrate my birthday as a surprise treat. When we arrived at reception there was no one to greet us and we had to use the phone to summond assistance. As we checked in the receptionist told us that no evening meal was available that night as the chef had the night off. We had travelled over 100 miles to be there and had to go into St. Austell in the end to find food !
The receptionist then proceeded to try and find our room, a difficult feat as it was only his second day in the job ! We trekked through most of the very steep garden trying to find it ( past a very dirty, empty outside swimming pool ) to the very edge of the garden. Room was pleasant enough, clean and tidy and so was bathroom. Not such great views....overlooking a hedge and a storage shed with outdoor funiture overflowing from it !
After eating out in St. Austell we came back tired and ready for bed, pulled back the covers and well.........the sheets ! What can I say except they were so hard and stiff it was like sleeping between sandpaper ! the pillowcase was just as bad. I have been a housekeeping manager for 12 years and I have never seen anything like it....... They could have stood up on their own ! It wasnt a pleasant sleeping experience.
Breakfast was very nice and catered for my vegetarian needs.
Overall, pretty disappointing stay and wouldnt return.

Room Tip: Dont choose a room in the garden if you dont like steep slopes

Following publication of this review we commenced a deep and thorough examination of our laundry provider and then invited a number of other laundries to quote too.

STIFF SHEETS
At first we did not understand what was going on, as we have our own Egyptian cotton sheets (most hotels rent their sheets and pillow cases from their laundries) and specify a 'starched finish' to give an extra degree of quality, however, we discovered that not all the starch from the previous application was being washed out before more was being added and we ended up with 'crispy sheets'. We would like to assure potential guests that we now have this situation under control, it should not recur and we also offer our apologies to this reviewer for the stiff sheets that they experienced.

DINNER
This reviewer's boyfriend booked online for a 1 night stay on Sunday February 5th and had no direct correspondence with him prior to the couple's arrival. Unfortunately, we did not know that this was a special occasion, nor did we know that they wanted to eat in our restaurant, which left us in a difficult situation as our restaurant is usually closed on a Sunday night and, in the winter, is sometimes closed on other nights as well if we do not have any advance dinner reservations.

OUTSIDE SWIMMING POOL
Our outside pool has sprung a leak and is likely to remain closed for the remainder of 2012, whilst we plan it's complete refurbishment in time for Sumer 2013. Thankfully we still have our lovely indoor pool, heated to 30C along with the 6 person hot tub just outside, which is even hotter at 38C.

ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE
We were pleased to read that the room and bathroom were clean and tidy and that breakfast was very nice.

IN CONCLUSION
We have certainly learnt from this guest's experience and have now returned our linen to the quality we have always expected.

No matter where you book, we would encourage all travellers not to assume that a restaurant will be available as it may already be full or, as in this case, closed - ESPECIALLY when it is a special occasion. It is always best to book ahead, which also gives the establishment an opportunity to advise you of which table times are available and arrange for the best table/sprinkles/cake/private dining/pianist/guitarist/candles/balloons/flowers/champagne/chocolates/strawberries/etc/etc to make the occasion extra special.

Thanks for reading.

“Elegant and attentive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

From the moment we arrived we were given a warm welcome it was although our thoughts were being read. Offers of refreshments always came at the right time.
Dinner in the restaurant was a very special treat, everything from canapes, starters to desert was outstanding, seasoned and cooked to perfection, I wont forget that dinner in a long while!
We both had treatments and used the spa facilties which didn't fail the standard of the hotel.
Overall, this place was beautiful, elegant, with the added sprinkling of attentive staff, you can't fault it one bit! :-)

“Brilliant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

My husband and I recently stayed at Boscundle Manor. Absolutely brilliant. I am a hard person to please, but I couldn't fault anything, at all. Would definitely recommend if you wanted a quiet break from it all. We stayed for 2 nights and can't wait to go again. Every morning all Molton Brown products were replaced. The breakfast was freshly cooked. If you get chance, do book an evening meal, we did. It was wonderful. You present yourself in the bar, have a drink, make your order and shortly after you are taken to your table and the meal arrives. Very efficient but relaxed. Thorough recommend it.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Louisa which was at the end of a corridor. We couldn't hear other guests, so ve...

“Fantastic location, hotel and staff”

We had our wedding here, the owners and staff were very helpful and ensured we got our day the way we wanted. We held our wedding as a surprise for our guests and the hotel could not have helped more to ensure that we had our fun. We had some guests with food allergies these were catered for well and without it being obvious to everyone. The attention to details was brilliant, could not recommend any higher if you want things done your way with help and advise along the way

“'STAFF NEED TO SMARTEN UP'. DEEP BATH. SUPERB FOOD.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

So am I being brutal by saying 'staff need to smarten up'. No. It's the only petty weak link I could find during my visit. Our suite had a deep, deep bath with a jacuzzi. What I liked is that the customer works the heaters, radiators etc., In many hotels it all goes off at 1000hrs. Not here! We used the bubble bath but unfortunately my partner switched on the jacuzzi and thought it was timed. (It wasn't. I switched it off) She disappeared. I had to rescue her but videoed it. Wonderful memory. The food was perhaps a little pricey, but wait, who cares when it is superbly presented, cooked well, tasty and served in a rather nice dining room. The staff were very friendly and extremely obliging. Be careful if you are staying in one of the 'cottages'. The track up to them after rain is dodgy. Don't bring a very big car or indeed a sports car. It's not far to walk, 2 mins, but uphill. Of course the main car park is just outside the main hotel front entrance. Lovely little well appointed lounge with a log fire. Breakfast service a little cramped. The cereal buffet bar is adjacent to reception desk. BUT, the breakfast menu is extensive and very well cooked. Lovely. Not a big hotel, quite a compact one really, but set in a very leafy environment. The indoor swimming pool is large and looks inviting. So would I stay there again? YES, most definitely. Thoroughly recommended. (nb. Don't forget - bubble bath and jacuzzi's don't mix! )

Room Tip: Outside of the hotel I would recommend the AGATHA.
