“Winter break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

This hotel came recommended by our neighbours as we were looking for a place to have short two night break to re-charge our batteries. We booked on the Winter Break offer which was dinner garden suite room and breakfast for £129 per night. Our summary of good points and not so good is as follows:

Restaurant - the food and the restaurant is excellent - first class service and cuisine so many dinner choices and flavours. Breakfast again very good. No complaints whatsoever in this department
Reception - very helpful and attentive
Buildings - the public areas are well maintained and full of interest especially the pictures
Bedroom - our room was spacious and quiet and fully functioning. Everything was clean. However, the bed was a disappointment - the mattress sagged and movement was accompanied by noise from the springs. Neither of us slept well and I would suggest the hotel management look at the mattress in Room 168. Other than that one but important issue the room was fine.
The spa is well appointed although there was condensation everywhere. The one disappointment was on Sunday when we tried to book a treatment or massage for the Monday only to be told that that the therapist was not available until 2 pm on the Tuesday after we were due to check out.
Overall though I would return to this hotel and recommend it to others especially if you are seeking excellent cuisine at reasonable prices

Room Tip: The garden suites are lovely but check the mattress first!

“I just liked it....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

A 10 hour working day begins and ends with the relaxed comfort, friendliness and touch of splendor this hotel provides.

Breakfast is diverse and tasty, everything from a healthy salmon and egg thing to a full english blow out. Evening meals are special and diverse, the rooms I stayed in were light and well equiped. A pleasant place, with pleasant people and pleasant facilities where you can stretch out, put your metophorical slippers on and just relax until the working day starts all over again.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms in the annex ... garden rooms or something.

“A 3 star hotel masquerading as something *far* better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

The number of 4 star hoitels I've stayed in that haven't been as good as this. The garden suite was large and well-equipped. Comfortable bed and a good bath and shower. The restaurant was a little gem and service and food were far better than would be expected. £20 a head led to an excellent meal and the wine list was good. Service at breakfast was superb - breakfast was brought to you piping hot; none of this getting it after it had sat under lights for half-an-hour. There was black pudding (and hog's pudding) too. So fresh and delicious.

Even tiny things like the lock on the patio door not working properly were sorted imediately and with a smile. The spa was excellent, gym and pool.

This was really a very good 4-star hotel and as such, represented excellent value at about £70 per night, dinner excluded.

Just very well done Penventon Park. You deserve to do well!

Room Tip: Choose a garden suite.

“Perfect bargain all in one hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Great place to stay if on business in Redruth. The decor is somewhat eclectic and outdated but the rooms are comfortable. As a regular visitor the staff have always been exceptionally helpful and pleasant. It does seem to attract the older guests who were bemused by our conversations. The chefs try and cater for a gluten free diet too which is great but choices are limited especially at breakfast and if you are vegetarian.

Room Tip: The corporate singles are a tad claustrophobic so upgrade to a classic double if you are planning on...

“Beautiful but Bland and Outdated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

The building is beautiful, big Georgian house, but the décor and food seems to have failed to move forward even a decade. This probably suits the majority of its clientele who are either over the age of 70 or ignorant locals who don’t know any better…
A party of 8, our table was booked for 8pm. We weren’t seated until 9pm and were eating desserts at 10.45- far too late for me and with no apologies or explanation of delay. Our food order was taken in the bar by a very nice young gentleman.
However service in the restaurant was inconsistent. There were many, many staff around but we were failed to be offered a wine list and water at the table. When we did order wine, we had to ask separately for water, which came about ½ hour later. The table was full of our empty glasses that we’d bought in from the bar. It would seem that restaurant staff weren’t collecting them as if they were being stubborn that it was the job of the bar staff instead. Maybe management should realise that this poor communication in allocation of duties has the biggest affect on the customers which is not a good thing.
The bread sticks that are provided on the table can only be described as something from the 1970’s. Individual plastic packets of plain dried bread-sticks that are no doubt bought in boxes of hundreds from the local ’Booker’ wholesalers store- Pointless and tacky.
The menu is overpriced and has weird concoctions. 1 member of our party had a breaded chicken breast served with a fried egg and anchovies. He described it as ‘Bernard Matthews style.’ The main courses were served with veg that didn’t even go with the dishes- roast potatoes, carrots and cauliflower- not really something that compliments grilled fish and pesto- my choice of main. The fillet steaks that my friends ordered looked nice, especially the homemade giant onion rings. Desserts and starters were just as bland as everything else. Sticky toffee pudding came with apologies of no sticky toffee sauce (!) – it’s not like its sourced from Outer Mongolia- sugar, butter and cream- it isn’t hard to make!
Upon arriving home a member of our party had received a call from the hotel to say we had been overcharged by over £100. Possibly our fault for not going through the bill with a fine tooth comb on paying, but at a prestigious establishment such as this we didn’t expect mistakes to be made- how wrong were we!
Its a shame that my review can't be anymore positive but the prices are too high and the standards are too low compared to other establishments in the county.
