“Excellent value”

Last week I stayed in a hotel in Lancashire charging £80 a night room only: The Penarth guest house was better. It doesn't have a swimming pool, conference facities etc.,but Diana is friendly and helpful, and the hot water was hot hot hot. Wonderful setting and I shall be recommending it to my friends in California.

This place is fab. I stayed with my husband and children for three nights and will definately be back early next year. The room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was fantastic (no need for lunch) and the staff were really friendly. I couldn't beleive some of the reviews I found on here, I certainly didn't find anything to moan about. I would say don't go if you are looking for a fancy boutique type place, this place is a family home and the atmosphere really reflects that. I loved chatting with the owners and other guests in the dining room and the owner was really obliging even letting me freeze my ice blocks in her freezer.
It is right next to the beach and just out of the little high street, couldn't be better placed.
Perranporth beach is just the best beach around, really big with proper sand, a lovely paddling stream, rock pools, caves everything really. Oh and I nearly forgot we took the dog with us, to the guest house and the beach!!! where else do you get that!!

“Grim, grubby and grimey”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2008

I booked this b&b because of their website which looked ok and I did read the other reviews. The bad ones did not put me off but I kept in mind what they had said and unfortunately found it all to be true, and after looking forward to this holiday with my young son for 4 months I can honestly say that I was bitterly disappointed.
On arrival the woman was quite abrupt and asked for the balance BEFORE showing us to our room. I kept a diary so I know that is true. She grabbed the cash out of my hand and then puffed her way up the stairs to show us our room. There was a ladder on the landing which did cause a problem to get into the shared bathroom and it looked quite creepy. We then zigzagged our way through a very narrow corridor to the end and our room looked ok but it was small with not much space to move around. We were left to carry our own luggage up the narrow stairs and struggled through the even more narrow corridor.
The bathroom was dirty as there is fluff in the corners and on the pipes, the bin only got emptied once in the week we were there, and the enamel on the bath was too rough to sit in. We had to share the bathroom with 2 other rooms. The water was scorching hot and nearly scalded my son. On the Wednesday I asked for the room to be made up and got told (quote) "we are not a hotel and can't keep running up & down the stairs" (unquote). She didn't do the cleaning herself but some young gothic looking thing did it. She does allow smoking in the rooms but only by an open window as ALL the rooms have smoke alarms, well our room (7) didn't have one!! Good job I don't smoke. One night we were woken up by the people in the next room arguing. It was 11pm and at breakfast I mentioned it. I got told that people are on holiday and do come in late. Well, I was on holiday too and reserve the right to have an early night. They told me the day after that they had a word with those people. On asking for clean towels, I found that they had been dumped outside our room. I was made to feel like I wished I hadn't said anything and I apologised for mentioning it - the disturbance and the making up of the room.
The owners lived below our room and there was a lot of door slamming late at night and in the morning I could hear them coughing as they are smokers and it was awful to think that they are cooking the breakfasts whilst trying to clear their lungs.
The whole week was dreadful and I really CANNOT recommend this establishment. Everything had a filthy look to it and the decor is in dire need of updating to the 21st century. I was depressed for the whole time I was there and was glad to get out. It really is not worth the money. The other review from August 2007 was right in calling it a hostel. We don't expect a B&B to be a 5* hotel just clean, welcoming and politness, and if you are confronted with a complaint it is not a good idea to get offensive about it.

  • Liked — It was close to the beach which my son enjoyed
  • Disliked — the owners and the decor the fact that not all the rooms are ensuite and should be

This guest booked a `shared facilities` room,
in fact she shared the bathroom with 1 other person for most of the stay (5 days NOT a week)
The guest knew she had to pay for the room on arrival, however, she was shown to her room (and helped with the luggage) and asked if she was happy, the reply was `yes`.
The stairs are the normal width, and the corridor is the same width, NOT very narrow.
We do not allow smoking in all the rooms, our website states that we have `smoking and none smoking rooms` we only allow smoking 2 of our 8 rooms.
I Do my own cleaning, with some help in July?August from my son and his partner, NOT `some young gothic looking "thing"` a very insulting way to describe a very friendly, pretty, 21year old university graduate.
I do NOT smoke, nor do I live in the room below her bedroom. I am the only person in my kitchen preparing and cooking the breakfast, and I can assure her that nobody was clearing their lungs whilst cooking breakfast.
This guest complained that her son was woken up at 9pm (not 11pm) by the people in the next room, I passed their oppologies to her.
We try very hard to please our guests and as we have a 40% return rate, we have alot of very happy guest, I am very sorry this guest did not enjoy her time at Penarth.

“Little gem of a Guest House by essa swim”

This is a superbly located, very friendly family run guest house where you are made very welcome throughout the year. Being so close to the beach is excellent for the surfer or family and the hospitality, breakfast and atmosphere is wonderful.

The house has a new modern look on the outside and deceptively large bedrooms on the inside. These are well kept and the beds are extremely comfortable.

A deffinate must place to stay if visiting cornwall at a very reasonable price.

“Beautiful guest house!!”

Me and my boyfriend stayed at Penarth Guest House in September 2007, and what a beautiful place to stay. Very Reasonably priced, Beautifully decorated, Fabulous breakfast and extremely helpful and friendly owners. Only 10 seconds walk to the beach!!

We found the owners to be amazingly friendly to us, and chatted to them for almost an hour after breakfast, finding great tips on where we could visit in Cornwall on our day trips out. Plus, The breakfast was massive!! We stayed in a gorgeous double en-suite room which was only £30 each per night, and included a shower, toilet,Sofa,Lovely king size bed,Tea/coffee etc and even Freeview!! ..... What more could we possibly want!

I would definately recommend staying here, and am certainly going back next year!! A*
