Having read the reviews on this site before going (but after booking!) I have to say that we headed off for our two day "groupon" offer stay in one of the self catering cottages in coldest February, a little worried about what we were to find. The drive up was very pretty and the reception of the hotel inviting and cosy (the log fire helped!). The cottage itself had obviously had a few finishing touches added recently: soft furnishings and re decoration which went some way to mask other flaws (broken tiles and poor (but hot) shower). The cottage was very warm though and clean, with the compact kitchen offering all you could want and we really weren't expecting it to be so generously stocked with everything you could want for a slap up cooked breakfast! This was a really great idea. On exploring the grounds with the children (aged 10 & 7) and the dogs we discovered a kind of "forgotten world" with real charm and such peace and tranquility. The children loved spying the peacocks and looking out for the speciality white one, and the trampoline. We did choose to dine in the restaurant the first evening, mainly due to its such inviting atmosphere (much more intimate and cosy than the pictures) and the food was very nice.
All in all we spent a very relaxed couple of days here. It definitely had a "unique" feel to it that is lost in some more clinical places but it does have so much more potential as well (I felt that I had walked into an episode of "Hotel Inspector"). I don't know that I'd be giving it such a warm review had I paid the full price and not the great value £99 for 2 nights that we did, but as it was, I really can't complain.
