After reading some of the reviews for this place I was extremely anxious about staying here, but I have to say I found little to complain about. Taking into consideration the age of the building, it was a lovely place. another reviewer complained about the lack of double glazing but for a building that age I wouldn't have expected it, in fact I've been quite surprised to find any double glazing. Admittedly I didn't stay in the self-catering cottages, but in the hotel itself.
If you want a country retreat that has open fires and squishy sofas, great bar food at reasonable prices, good breakfasts, helpful and friendly staff and owners, plus great surroundings / grounds then this is the place to go.
when we arrived we were given a choice of two rooms, so that was an unexpected bonus. after looking at both 6 and 7 we chose number 6. although the room was cold they did explain why and found a heater to warm the room up, so I can't complain about that at all.
I wouldn't think twice about staying there again, I'd jump at the chance without batting an eyelid.

I have been working away regularly for the past year and i can safely say this is the worst hotel i have ever stayed at, what were the problems ,well lets start from the beginning, hard to find poorly sign posted and badly lite, when i drove up to the hotel i thought i was in a 1980s American horror movie.After a while i found reception and waited a while to be greeted by a nice enough lady who showed me to my room.After paying around £65 a night bed and breakfast i expected a lot more i have had better facilities at a £35 a night B&B, the room was smelly,old fashioned and just down right horrible, no biscuits , manky shower curtain with the shower was so slow it was hopeless. The bed was so bad i honestly considered sleeping on the floor. Thin walls,lots of noise.The food in the restaurant lived up to the hotels 1980s theme, high in quantity low in quality.I had the prawn cocktail which was bad the ham salad was awful, cheap ham bought from the local supermarket,went to bed very late as i was unable to sleep, the worst night sleep i.ve had in ages.So summing up i would only stay here if you were mad or desperate and had nowhere else to stay or you wanted to step back in time. This hotel made the apartment i stayed on a 18-30s holiday seem like the ritz (And that had a open sewer running along the side of it)

Two weeks after making our booking in October we received a call from the hotel stating that although someone had written the dates in the diary they had not checked availability and that in fact the hotel had a large party booking for that weekend so they couldn't accommodate us on the Saturday. This was only one week before our booking and we insisted that the hotel sorted out this problem of their making. They were not very forthcoming and it was left to us to keep on contacting them to find out what they proposed doing about it. Even up to the night before our booking we had not received definitive confirmation that they could accommodate us.

On arrival at the hotel we were told we had been booked into one of their cottages. Considering we were expecting a four-poster or superior room we were very disappointed. The cottage was tired and in need of attention, particulary the bathroom. The bed slats were actually propped up with bits of wood.

The staff were were inattentive and when asked at breakfast if a fried egg could be replaced with scrambled egg, the plate returned with the scrambled egg just dumped on top of the fried egg, We felt that the hotel received their request for a large party booking after we had made our booking and they decided to try and push us out. Without our assertiveness and insistence that they sorted out the problem they would have cancelled our booking. Customer relations are non-existent as they offered no alternatives or compensation for the inconvenience they put us through.

In the middle of nowhere which is ideal when you just want to get away from it all! A great location to explore Cornwall.. When we arrived we were greeted by two of the eight resident peacocks and later that evening met "Polly", the owners Great Dane, who although looked daungting was the soppiest dog ever! Polly loves the fireplace in the evenings and constantly tries to get "into" the fire! The hotel is a tad tired and rundown on the outside (smoking area and patio can do with a little tlc) but very quaint and very much an old Manor House inside - a place where you really feel at home. The staff were brillliant and really looked after us well and THE FOOD IS OUTSTANDING!!! We had intended to eat in the restaurant for my birthday meal only but booked for the next evening straight away. The only downside for us was the poor shower in the bathroom but we could live with that and would certainly return!!!
