I have stayed at the Renaissance Hotel, Heathrow very many times so, in a sense, this review is cumulative but still based largely on my latest stay. We use it frequently to avoid central London rates as it is within Oyster range and local buses run in to the Heathrow central area (for Underground) free. It can have very good rates but, as with all hotels the rack rates are frightening and ridiculous. On this occasion, we were in a small room which claimed to demand £359 a night EXCLUDING VAT! No-one in their right mind....
There have been various degrees of refurbishment over the recent years but none partcicularly aggressive. The most pointless of these was the replacement of the porte-cochère which is now an under-sized modern structure completely out of keeping with the rest of the faded exterior. Although the floor plan looks simple on paper, it is common to encounter lost souls looking for their rooms as signage is poor and unclear. The two key areas which have been neglected are the lifts and the car park (which does offer viable and affordable holiday parking). Although not crowded on this occasion, the car park can be anarchic due to a combination of poor markings, narrow spaces and peoples' thoughtlessness in using those spaces. The motion of the lifts causes concern amongst even the calmest of travellers and it is common for one to be out of order.
The rooms vary but are invariably adequate for short airport stays although inward looking rooms have a gloomy aspect. The area is not rich in eating choices which is a shame because the hotel's Duo Restaurant is an overpriced under-achiever. They have fiddled with the service over the years in an attempt, perhaps, to meet variable demand with minimal wastage. The main victim was the once excellent buffet wihich is now a poor choice and often best avoided. This leads one to the expensive a-la-carte. I will concede that, on this visit, the food quality was good and the portions large but the prices were still very 'airport'. One member of staff really should have stepped into the shower before adding his distinctive aroma to our dinner experience by leaning over our table.
Overall, the Renaissance is acceptable for pre-travel stays especially with a runway view.
Room Tip: Depends whether you want to see the runway or not. I do, but I'd guess triple glazing was not in...
