“Good hotel, poor location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

We had travelled on work. Conference was at this hotel and hence we had to stay here for the duration.

The hotel is quite close to the airport and there are quite a few free bus services to the hotel. 111, 245, 555 etc. However if you need to get into the city, then you need to take one of these buses to Terminal 3 and then catch the underground or Heathrow express to the city. It took an average of an hour and a half each way.

Rooms were decently sized. bathroom was also a decent size, but the bathtub that you have to climb into, to take a shower was quite high and could be difficult for people with stiff joints or aching legs. There was no handrail in our bathroom and we had to hold on to the shower apparatus to ensure we didn't slip. The flushing system in our room was terrible.

Breakfast was good and had a large spread with eggs to order and waffles, but room service was absoultely terrible. The day we first reached, it was too late to go anywhere. We ordered a medium rare steak - it came well done - too dry, no sauce, no seasoning. Couldn't even take 2 bites out of it. The thai green curry was a sticky mess. Who puts cornflour in thai curry?

This is a huge hotel and has plenty of people needing to use the 4 elevators. But the elevators are so slow. They take about a minute after reaching, for the doors to open on each floor.

Service staff is friendly and helpful. The concierge was very good about booking some tickets for us. They have a tie up with a taxi company if you need to use one.

You have to pay for internet access.

There is a starbucks on the premises which offers better coffee and lite bites, than the hotel restaurant. Water heater is provided in the room with provision for brewing tea or coffee.

There's a store at the gas station opposite from where you can buy crisps, juice, soda and water. (Bottled water in the hotel is very expensive).

If you have to stay here, I recommend a 5 minute walk to the 3 magpies next door for a much better quality meal.

This hotel is ok, if you need to be near the airport. We wouldn't stay here of our own choice.

“Decent Airport Hotel with Pros and Cons”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

I recently stayed at the Renaissance for a business meeting in Hook. I found the staff to be helpful (they recommended a great nearby pub, helped arrange transportation to Windsor Castle, and the check in and check out processes were very efficient and quick). The rooms were decent; i.e. very clean, reasonable size but a bit outdated. It was the first room I've stayed at in the UK that had an iron. Even though I had a ground floor room and the hotel is right near the runway my room was very quiet (and the bed was very comfortable). Getting to and from the airport was easy with Hotel Hoppa (and cheaper than a taxi). Service in the hotel bar/restaurant wasn't good and expensive; so, I ate my breakfasts and one lunch at the Starbucks. Overall, I would say it was worth the $80/night I paid on the weekend but not worth the $160/night they charged me for a weekday night.

“Overlooks the Runway at Heathrow”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

Stayed at this hotel for one night in order to be close to the airport. We booked a hotel with parking package, which included one night with parking at the hotel itself, and two weeks in the long stay car park for Terminal 3. A frequent free shuttle bus runs from the long stay car park into the airport. We travel frequently from Heathrow to Washington to stay with our son, and this package was one of the best we have had. The check-in was very slow, but when we eventually got to the desk we were offered a free glass of champagne or orange juice. We took the upgrade offered, which included use of the cosy VIP lounge, beer, wine, soft drinks and coffee up to 11 pm. hot snack buffet, plus breakfast the next morning. This was a good deal because we had the whole package for not much more than the cost of breakfast. The VIP lounge has a great view of the airport runway across the road. There was no problem ordering hot drinks then taking them back to our room. The room was comfortable and clean plus we were not disturbed by any noise. We booked this package through a cashback website and bearing in mind we did not have any shuttle bus costs, this was good value for money.

“First trip from LHR”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

We've been avoiding it for years; traveling from LHR. Needn't have worried. This hotel and parking great. My daughter actually said Wow as we walked in and that is saying something. Upgraded to a club room ( for £40 a must ) and sat picking in the club lounge at the meager buffet ( a little gripe ) but free wine and beer plus free wifi for teenager. Didn't go mad but just ended the day nicely. The young lad in the lounge was very helpful and got me some bread to make my daughter a sandwich but just looking at the runway in the quiet environment was nice. Hopper bus both ways was sooooo not stressful. I am re thinking Virgin Orlando for Virgin Miami. Whatever anyone else thinks this trip exceeded my expectations and made LHR far less frightening. Definitely re book and recommend if traveling from LHR. NB the put you up for the 16yr old just about did it for her so anything above that or 1 person is a no no. One night before a holiday was fun - anything else??? PPS chap who checked us in was so so nice; professional and friendly ( don't know his name but if his manger can look us up Goodwin then I hope he gets a tick in the box)

Room Tip: Upgrade to club

“Excellent stopover location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

The location of this hotel is excellent, having rapid access to all terminals in a short space of time.
Airport hotels are never the cosiest of places and this is no exception. The constant to-ing and fro-ing of aircrew at all hours, makes the public areas more reminiscent of an airport terminal rather than a hotel.
Having said that, the quality of accommodation was excellent. The rooms were adequate in size and if , like me, you have a fascination for aircraft, then get a room on the third floor facing the runway and you can have wonderful views. The excellent sound insulation means you get the view without being disturbed by the noise.
The key to the succes of this stay was to take up the £20 upgrade which gave access to the club room. Here you have an extremely comfortable, staffed (outstandingly) lounge where you can get free beer/wine or soft drinks and evening snacks and a delightful view of the airport. This enabled us, effectively, to transform a giant complex into a a more discrete, small hotel atmosphere.
Having eaten dinner and breakfast in the main dining room, I would describe the food as unremarkable. I found the choice to be limited and rather unappealing. The quality was acceptable but no more than that.
The main hotel staff were efficient, but with the intensity and pace of the guest turnover, lacked the warmth that a smaller establishment could more easily provide.
In short, a fairly priced, excellently located airport hotel but made enjoyable only by upgrading.
