We live locally and booked the French Horn Restaurant for a 55th birthday treat. It was a fabulous day and we decided to walk the 3 miles each way to Sonning along the (slightly muddy) Thames tow path. Hence we arrived with our yukkie walking boots on, and removed them at the entrance of the hotel. This was obviously not the right thing to do. We walked into the reception area shoeless (having been watched removing our boots) and were requested to take a seat while the manager was consulted because our shoeleesness was a problem. We were going out for what we hoped was a nice meal, and my wife had taken special care to look her best, even though the boots would obviously let her down. She went off to powder her nose, while I waited to see if we passed muster. We were made to feel about 2 years old whilst our fate was decided. The manager ruled that if we put our muddy boots back on, we could enter the dining room, and the rest of the meal passed smoothly. We were told that stockinged feet were not acceptable because we might cut our tootsies on broken glass and the insurance would not cover it. My wife said to me that she thought that was utter b******s and perhaps they were worried that our feet were smelly, which she considered to be a perfectly valid concern. I was of the opinion that we had violated some 1970s dress code. We should really have left straight away, but we had walked for nearly an hour to get there!
Anyway the meal was not bad, but given the competition in this area, I do not consider it great value - I can go to far classier (and cheaper) eatablishments locally and receive much nicer, genuinely friendly service, and great food too!
The French Horn feels like a Parisian Restaurant in the 1980s - terribly snooty service, very pretentious and the food not really up to the standard they think it is.
