We recently stayed in The Old Forge while on holiday in England. I had been to the area before but my husband had never been to England before so I wanted to find comfortable, charming places not quite on the beaten path. I wanted to show him Avebury and Stonehenge so The Old Forge was in the perfect location.
Our room was actually a suite. We had a kitchenette, a very large and comfortable bedroom with TV, a shelf full of books, attractive decor, and a lovely clean, modern bathroom with a great shower. After having been in other B&Bs throughout England that had been built into the tiny odd, albeit charming, spaces in very old houses, it was nice to be able to stand up straight and move around comfortably in the bathroom. My only very minor complaint is similar to another guest's. It would have been nice if the towels had been changed or if the towel bar had been warmed so the towels were not still damp next day.
Parking is excellent at The Old Forge. There is a large lot directly across the road inside a fence so you don't have to worry that your car will be hit by passing vehicles.
The breakfast was delicious, well-cooked and generous. A typical full-English is available, along with cereals and lighter fare in a beautiful dining room adjacent to the big kitchen.
Laura and Leslie were very nice hosts. They answered all our questions about the area and good places to eat. They recommended The Bell at West Overton about a mile away for dinner. The nearby Waggon & Horses was closer to Avebury where we had been sightseeing and and we stopped there first but moved on quickly after receiving truly appalling non-service. Thank goodness, because The Bell was really good. Food and service were spectacular and the staff and people (and their dogs) very friendly.
The village of East Kennett is lovely and minutes from Avebury. Stonehenge is about 15 or 20 miles away. The B&B is in the white chalk horse area. Plenty to see and do. In our two days there, we visited Avebury and Lacock Abbey and hiked the hill to see the Cherhill chalk horse. We did not go to Stonehenge as there was a charity walk there that day and thousands of visitors were expected.
The Old Forge is in a great location with lots to see and do nearby and be able to come back to total comfort after a long day of sightseeing. It's an easy trip to and from Heathrow too, well under two easy driving hours so if you have an afternoon flight when you leave, you can have a nice breakfast first and then get to the airport in plenty of time.
Highly recommended and a great value.
Room Tip: We didn't see the other rooms but I'm sure they are all equally comfortable and clean.
