The School House Hotel in Hook, run by the lovely Karen and Tonny is a fantastic place to stay for business or leisure. A colleague and myself stayed for one night in blustery January and the welcome couldn't have been warmer. I stayed in a ground floor double which was fitted out with antique furniture (a lovely brass bed) and ample radiators/heaters. Dinner was the most amazing selection of home-cooked food, including a truly jaw-dropping roasted black pudding starter, hearty game pastie and pork loin (good sized portions) - all cooked on the premises by Tonny. The three course dinner was brilliant value for £16.50 and the wine was very reasonably priced. Meals are take in the heart of the old school building, with a two-storey open-to-the-rafters school hall, with gorgeous woodburning stove. Breakfast was 'continental' with an excellent array of porridge, fruit, cereals, toast, crumpets, jams and cheese. Karen and Tonny were so wonderfuly friendly and made sure we had everything we needed (the hotel also had free wifi). I shall definitely be back again whilst doing business in Swindon (only 10 mins away) - this definitely beats any faceless hotel chain in the town!
