“Disappointed sleepless night”

Stayed at the Hotel for a family funeral! After receiving the confirmation I noticed that you couldn’t book into the room until 1400hrs, the funeral was at the same time. I rang the hotel, unluckily I did not get the man’s name, I explained that we were driving 4 hrs and needed to get into the room to get changed for the reasons above. I was told we couldn’t get into the rooms till 1400hrs, I repeated myself, only to hear ‘ok well I’ll see what can be done, we clean the first floor first so maybe we will put you in there or there will be somewhere for you to change but maybe not your room’……..not very helpful or even a little bit sincere!

We arrived at 1230, to be told yet again that the rooms wouldn’t be available until 1400hrs; I explained that I had rung and went through the entire conversation again! We were showed to room 1!

The stairs on the way up were filthy. We were greeted by dated wallpaper with boarder but clean enough until my partner moved the bedside table to use the plug! The room was stifling; luckily we could turn the radiator down and open a window.

In the bar they were extremely nice and friendly and once the family were altogether (about 20 of us) they were kind enough to let us re-arrange tables and chairs.

We didn’t sleep well, we couldn’t sleep well, the Sports Bar which adjoined the hotel closed about 0200am, the patrons were so so noisy for about 1 hour. Then the wind picked up and the hotel metal swing sign began creaking constantly (it was on our outside wall by the window), it sounded like someone was opening and closing a metal door…continuously! We informed the man in the office in the morning, where we handed in our keys who apologised!

We didn’t make it down for breakfast in the correct time, but the staff was only to willing to make us a hot sandwich, which really was above and beyond helpfulness.

Room Tip: If you do stay – good cost £55 a double room with breakfast, ask for a room that is not on the main...

booked into this hotel by my company not my choice at all !!!
not at all impressed with this hotel.
firstly the lights in my room did not work and the staff member did not know how to fix it lucky for me i found the breakers and turned them back on...why was they turned off anyway when the room was allocated. the carpet had not been hovered and room not dusted. all around the bath was covered in black mould. room was very tiny and cold to windows did not close properly and had big gaps and were rotten. with the recent very high winds we had last week it was very uncomfortable. loud music played well past 11pm not good when you have to get up and work next day, could not hear the tv over it and they kept turning it up. TV keeps breaking up on all channels !!. colleagues room was bigger and even colder but same lack of cleaning and tv not working correctly.
Food looks awfull staff serving dont know who has ordered..... what and look like they are all on Drugs.
Breakfast is not very big and made me sick one day. tea cups and juice glasses dirty have to sort out to find a clean one.
blood stains on pillow case...bed sheets not cleaned properly.
avoid at all costs !!

“Fine for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

Big comfy room, clean bed (less clean towels...), ok brekky, good value for a one night stopover.
Very noisy til middle of night due to entuisaistic revellers in high street. not pub's fault!

Room Tip: if there are any, have a room that doesn't face the high street. Car park would be a much better...

“Old and lots of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

Would definitely recommend this 17th century hotel (it was the headquarters for General Fairfax during the British Civil War in the 1600s) for Americans interested in experiencing an old village inn. Rooms were large. Beds comfortable with freshly washed and ironed sheets and duvets. Remodeled en suite bathrooms. No lift and the stairs are steep and tilt every-which-way. The floors also slope, but that adds to the charm.
Traditional British pub downstairs offers good meals and atmosphere, perhaps the best we experienced in our stay in Great Britain. There's a small aviation museum in the lobby which made for interesting after-dinner purusing. Free breakfast in remodeled dining room offered typical English breakfast fare - everything fried but well-prepared.
Noise. We were there on a weekday in October so it was quiet, but I can imagine the pub could get noisy on the weekends and when a game is on. Our room overlooked High Street and we could hear morning traffic, which was fine because we wanted to see Stonehenge early in the morning. Fell asleep instantly because we were exhausted from touring Salisbury the previous day. Amesbury is 5 minutes from Stonehenge and Old Sarum and 10 minutes from Salisbury. A perfect mid location.
My cousins who live in the UK said they will definitely bring future visiting family and friends to the George Hotel.
