On arrival the hotel is quite imposing but it was a little concerning that much of the car park is quite dark. If you can park next to the hotel there are some very bright lights, there is CCTV at reception but useful only if someone is actually watching it. I have never been here before so I have no idea regarding any security issues.
The hotel itself is fairly old fashioned although much of the frontage appears to be new/replaced. My biggest gripe is that the hotel is a bit of a rabbit warren over 2 floors and some of the directions for rooms appears misleading, had to wander around for a while before I found my room. The old fashioned principle continued with an actual metal key - not really what you want to keep in your pocket! You had to lock the room when you left, in some respects a little quaint these days. The actual room was nice and, like previous reviews, on the cold side as the radiator was turned off.
The room was a good size, clean overall - carpet could have done with a steam clean - and the bed was comfortable. The hotel was quiet throughout the night but there were few cars parked this may have provided the reason for this. The bathroom was in fairly good condition and clean, although I disliked the small screen when showering as there was a reasonable sized puddle on the floor when I had finished.
When I went for my evening meal I was given a table right next to a radiator (this one was on) and was sort of cooked on one side and underdone on the other... As to the meal it was fairly good although the orange was overdone in the soup. The cajun chicken was also a little overdone and dry, but there was a nice big bowl of tasty chips and the salad was excellent although the jalapeno pepper slices were unexpected and a little hot. The meal was certainly filling and enough not to consider a sweet course unlike some of the fancy nouveau cuisine some restaurants serve up. The staff were pleasant and the service was pretty good - though they had forgotten a spoon to go with the soup. In the morning I did not have time for a full breakfast and settled for simplicity and cannot help with any comments other than there was no food being kept warm under any heat lamps. The waitress asked if I wished anything which implied that it would be freshly made so perhaps previous comments have been taken on board.
On a plus side there was free WiFi, allegedly in the public areas, but I found it accessible in the room - perhaps I was just fortunate where the room was located.
Overall this hotel is pretty reasonable but not particularly outstanding. I would not be averse to staying here again (perhaps influenced by the limited alternatives in the area).
