El Jardin is a little too far away from town to walk to, but the trade off is well worth it. Nestled into a hillside of flowers and birds. El Jardin is peaceful, quiet and has stunning views. The owners maintain a very high standard with the accomodations; the rooms are very clean, wonderful bright colors with excellent beds, and the meals are simply fantastic - every single one of them. It is a small, intimate hotel and I understand that it was originally designed and run by an architect and her chef daughter. Timothy and Dauphine are the new owners. The rooms are all unique, very comfortable and painted in wonderfully vibrant colors. I loved it, as did my husband (also an architect). The pool is a great feature too. Small enough so you're not tempted to swim laps, but large enough to cool off and float around. My husband and I stayed at El Jardin 6 nights over Christmas, and then 4 more nights in town. There was no comparison. Downtown is fine if you're interested in late night dancing or the bars, but if you want to relax in comfort, safety, quiet and good food, El Jardin is the place.
