Great hosts, cool vibe, awesome food--and a great location. As first-time travelers to Nicaragua, we debated about where to stay: in San Juan del Sur or closer to the better beaches just up the coast. For us, Empalme was a great solution. A five minute walk brings you to Playa Marsella, where we were often the only one's on the beach - perfect for rest and relaxation. Up the road, about halfway between Marsella and Empalme is a fantastic local restaurant serving regular Nicaraguan fare done really well (a heaping plate of food and 2 beers will run you about $7). Playa Madera is just a little farther, but is the place to be for serious and beginner surfers alike. $10 gets you a private lesson and a board for the day. $7 gets you two beers and excellent fish tacos at one of the three small restaurants on the beach.
Roy and Karen are fun hosts, so while we had a car and didn't need to rely on them to get to town, it was also nice to just sit in the hammock chairs with a rum drink and talk with them and the other guests. Their cabanas are nice and comfortable each with a private shower. They provide enough privacy and security, but have an "outside" feel so you're going to hear the sounds of nature. They have mosquito nets, but we had no need for them during our stay. Karen cooks up a mean breakfast every morning. All in all, we had a great time in Nicaragua, Empalme being one of the reasons.
