Thanks to its unsettled past, Nicaragua has largely escaped the tourist development of other central American countries like Costa Rica, Panama, and Belize. San Juan del Sur is one of the most developed beach resorts in Nicaragua, but that isn't saying much. I suppose this is what most Costa Rican coast resorts must have been like thirty years ago -- small, quiet, friendly, relaxed, laid back.
There is not much to the town -- a string of restaurants and bars along a beach; behind that a modest settlement with homes, shops, and a handful of hotels; and then a ring of hills, beyond which lie more coves and beaches, mostly uninhabited and deserted. It seems that not so long ago there were big plans to build luxury developments along the coast -- new dirt roads have been built and view-site plots demarcated, but all that has fizzled out as the world economy has taken a dive.
The hotel Victoriano is excellently situated, across the road from the beach at one end of strip, but in easy walking distance of the town's activities. The hotel itself is a low structure, built of wood in the Victorian tropical "ginger bread" style of Key West, with airy breezeways between its different parts. The rooms are clean and comfortable and there is a small pool facing the ocean. Service at the Victoriana is cheerful, if a bit rustic, and not all staff members have a good command of English. The restaurant is adequate for breakfast but you can do much better along the strip for lunch and dinner -- there are several places with good seafood menus.
So, if you are looking for luxury and sophistication, this hotel is probably not for you. If you are OK with unpretentious charm in a not very touristy beach town, the Victoriana is a good place to stay.
