The room was charmingly decorated, the bed was comfortable, the inn itself was full of wonderful old-fashioned architectural details (yet totally modernized), the service was warm and friendly, the breakfast was delicious, and the grounds were gorgeous. I really liked that it was slightly larger than your average B&B, so it felt more like a small inn rather than just like you're getting a room in somebody's house. They have an adorable dog who is very well mannered and friendly and I was even allowed to go out for a walk with him around the beautiful grounds!
I especially liked the wide variety of books on all kinds of subjects that were placed in my guest room and the downstairs sitting room, which you could pick up and browse through at your leisure. I also appreciated the water, iced tea and cookies that were left for guests.
The only things that made it SLIGHTLY less than perfect: It was a tad farther drive to a few of the main area attractions than I'd hoped (Hagley Museum and Brandywine River Museum). Not terribly onerous, but maybe a 25 minute drive. And the inn's parking area was fairly dark at night; I would have appreciated a few more subtle pathlights to help in walking back to the inn.
To end on a positive note-- I appreciated that they had several smaller tables in the breakfast room in addition to the large group table, so if you wanted a bit more privacy you could have it (but still feel part of the group -- everyone was very friendly). And when I expressed that I couldn't eat the breakfast dish with cheese, without a moment's hesitation they asked what I would like instead and cooked it right up. Wow! Thank you Sweetwater, it was a delightful experience.
