The Motto at the Dear head Inn seems to be "well, if we HAVE to..." but despite this, we had a great time there. This eccentric place has been around for many years (with different owners), and its main claim to fame is the great lineup of jazz acts that they are able to book. They are about one and one half hours from Manhattan, and over the years this little club has been able to book many acts from major headliners to little-knowns. We stayed there for 2 nights in early October and saw both, a great new singer (think love child of John Waters and Billie Holiday, and a venerable piano player/singer who is a regular there.
The inn is being refurbished, and our room was very nicely done with a comfortable bed, low-end antiques and a nicely redone bathroom. Our only complaint was no light by the bed - which makes it hard to read. Oh, did I mention that there is no TV or internet access, so this place is definitely for those who want to unplug (which suited us).
Now the eccentric part - to get to most of the rooms, you had to go outside, walk around the inn, and up a couple of flights of steps - some outside and some more inside. So if you can't do steps, either find out if there is a lower level room, or forget it. Fortunately we had small bags, because this is a do-it-yourself place. Breakfast is provided, but it is definitely bare-bones. We had to track someone down for our first day's breakfast (back to the "well, if we HAVE to"). If you don't want an english muffin or box cereal, you can always head down the road to a farmer's market stand that had every pie and baked-good imagineable.
We were there on a room-dinner-and show package, and it really was a great deal - especially given how good the music was. They had reserved us good seats, and the dinner menu was fine, the club was intimate and packed full of people, which makes for a great show, and at the end of the night all we had to do was go up the stairs and fall into bed. We had the package for two nights, and if we do it again, we will arrange for the package for one night, and then just do the room and show for the second night. It turns out one of the best Italian restaurants outside of NYC is right down the road, so it would have been nice to eat there one of the nights.
