I went to the Deer Head Inn with my husband and three children. We went on an overnight inPensylvania in order to meet up with my brother and his wife, and to do some snow tubing. When we arrived, all carrying multiple bags, the woman at the bar didn't look up, but turned her back to us, tapped on the computer, and told us how much we owed. No "Hi" or "Welcome." She then directed us to go outside in the cold night, walk through two levels of porches, and "just keep going up" to the 4th floor. She never offered to carry anyone's bag, even though my youngest child is eight and was struggling with two backpacks. The room - a suite - was cold, and when I asked about a thermostat, she told me they were on the electric units (but didn't turn them on for us), then left.
The suite had no phones, no TV and no pillows for the pull-out couch (even though I'd told them there were five of us and they made sure to charge us extra for each kid). Later, we went down to the restaurant for dinner. We were told that it was booked. I will give them credit for the fact that the hostess (I think she was a co-owner, or manager) told us she'd find us a table since we didn't know where else to eat that late. However, there would be a cover charge of $15 per person for the music. We accepted, despite the fact that it was six-thirty pm, and we were not there for the music! She seated us, along with my brother and his wife, in the back. About fifteen minutes later, she told us we had to move - she'd forgetten that our table was reserved. Our new table was directly facing the jazz musicians. As we chatted and caught up with each other, the music began. Soon, the entire restaurant grew quiet. My twelve year-old son continued to talk to his uncle, but he was sternly reprimanded by a huffy patron. Clearly, talking is not allowed at this restaurant if there's music playing, which we found surprising, especially since they never mentioned this when they saw we had kids with us.
The food took an hour to arrive, and was good, but not worth the steep price. Back in the rooms, we realized we needed pillows and more blankets. After looking through the linen closets to no avail, my husband descended the four floors again to get help. The owner of the bar found someone to cover for him, and came upstairs to dig around in another closet for our linens.
Our night was not restful, since the quiet rule did not apply to the rooms, apparently. There was a loud crowd just below us who kept us up until about three in the morning. The next morning at 8:30 am, we went downstairs for our continental breakfast in a dismal room of the restaurant. By this time, we realized that the night before, they had charged us an 18% gratuity for our entire bill, not just dinner. We asked the woman reading a newspaper at the bar about this, and she explained that she had no authority to address it, and the manager would be down at ten-thirty. She told my husband: "I can call her room and try her cell phone, but she will not come down before ten-thirty." We also saw another couple who wanted to dispute their bill, and were clearly upset at this predicament. Finally, she showed up, looking groggy, and amended our bill.
The jazz was pretty good, and the suite was very pretty. But I truly wish that we had not paid hundreds of dollars for one night's stay, to be treated with such utter indifference.
