Our night began with saddle-shoed gentleman and proprietor, Glen, escorting us into the renovated 1860's Hammanasett, richly decorated with antiques and seasonal trimmings. He showed us the game room, wherein a heavy billiards table and statement-piece mantel dominated (complimentary sherry sat on a silver tray). The parlor had book-lined shelves and a baby-grand piano (complimentary port). Glen took our reservation for the 10 a.m. breakfast (the other option being 9 a.m.) Then up several flights of stairs to our room, a romantic's dream, the decor in keeping with the B & B's theme. A large selection of complimentary snacks and drinks were available. We went to Azie's in Media for dinner, about 15 minutes, serving an upscale global fusion menu. The next morning at breakfast, we were surprised to find that every room had been occupied, so quiet had the inn been. Breakfast was in an ornate room at a large, heavy table and comfortable chairs. Americana music played softly in the background as Glen and Ashley engaged the table guests in conversation over a breakfast of juice or mimosa, baked pears, apple cake, southwestern egg casserole, sausage, and coffee. After check out at 11 a.m., we walked the property, settled on the top of a hill, surrounded by woods, very peaceful and calm. We ended our trip with a drive through the country, viewing the Brandywine River, the museum on the river, Winterthur, etc. If you are looking for a romantic weekend in the country is what you are looking for, Hamanassett will exceed expectations.
