“Wonderful hospitality!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

We had a lovely one night stay at Hamanasett on Friday night, Nov. 19th. The b+b is lovely, with beautifully decorated public spaces and comfortable rooms and bathrooms. Breakfast on Saturday morning was decadent - pound cake french toast, brandy/pecan syrup, eggs, bacon, and perfectly made coffee. The owners were gracious, and made us feel like we were at home. We especially enjoyed learning about the history of the property and how the owners acquired it and turned it into the b+b it is today. Overall, a 5 star experience that we'll recommended to our friends and family.

“The Best B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

This visit marked our tenth anniversary at the Hamanassett. For the tenth year in a row, it seemed like a whole new place. Ashley and Glen are always making improvements to our room (the Inverness) and to the inn. With the accommodations and the friendliness of our hosts, it's like being at home. This past year alone, Ashley and Glen added French doors that led to a wraparound veranda in the Inverness room.

Ashley and Glen were, as usual, ready with restaurant suggestions, places to visit, and directions if we needed them. These suggestions come from personal experience, since our hosts visit these places themselves before they would think of recommending them.

As always, we appreciated the special amenities our hosts provided, including the port wine and sherry they leave in the dining room and living room, the overstocked common area where you have your choice of soda, tea, coffee, and snacks. Simple pleasures like the never-ending supply of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies right outside our room are just what the cookie monster--that would be me--ordered. Sorry Ashley, I couldn't resist and I cannot tell a lie. It was I that kept emptying the cookie jar.

This visit, Ashley and Glen outdid themselves with the breakfasts, which shouldn't surprise us, but still does. Where should I start? The pears in caramel sauce were the best. The pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, which Ashley makes especially for us every visit, were even better than I remembered.

This year, Ashley made a couple of new dishes for us, which surpassed even her usual brand of excellence. There was the orange sliced fruit course (orange slices, swimming in a sugary Grand Marnier sauce). I expected tartness from this treat, but was surprised with savory sweetness instead.

Another new breakfast was the Dutch Cradles. How do I begin to describe this? Tons of sliced apples in a gigantic puff pastry shell, covered with a sugary cinnamon sauce.

As if that wasn't enough, on our last morning, Glen made "Eggs Bubba" for us. Was that breakfast or dinner, Glen? This was a medallion of chicken fried steak, covered with a poached egg in a southern cream gravy served on home made biscuits, with a side of stone-ground grits. I'm a northerner that never developed a taste for grits, but I've been converted. We're coming back for this one, y'all.

Once again, thanks for a enjoyable and memorable visit. We look forward to our next visit, which we've already booked.

Holly and Joe

“A great find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

This is a "do again" B&B. From making the reservation to departing this B&B, it was a great experience. We found both Glen and Ashley to be welcoming and helpful. Their website provided accurate directions (if they are followed as written), an extensive list of area attractions and restaurants, and a helpful suggested itinerary for a multiple day stay. The B&B is well maintained, beautifully and comfortably appointed. Amenities abound.....from a library of DVD's to a piano and pool table and homemade cookies. Our room was large and had everything we needed and more. Breakfast was awesome. The setting was elegant, the service was superb and the food was "to die for." We will definitely do this again. And thank you for your support of veterans!

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and that we were able to offer you and the other veterans a complimentary room to say "Thank you for your service". The free rooms for veterans (B&Bs for Vets) was started last year by an innkeeper in West Virginia and has grown to include hundreds of innkeepers across the United States who offer free room nights to veterans of all branches of the service t thank them for keeping our way of life. I was honored to have all of you and your significant others as our guests at Hamanassett.

“Beautiful B&B- rude owners/service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

We stayed here for the weekend and were very happy with the room, the little amenities like snacks left for guests, and the common areas were well kept. The breakfasts were pretty good - I wouldn't describe as 5 stars as others have- they had some hits and misses. What brings it to an average rating is the service provided from the owners. For a bed & breakfast, I expect a little more of a personal touch and at the most base level- pleasantness from those providing service. My husband planned this weekend as a surprise for me and he spoke to both owners on the phone and they both seemed personable.

We arrived on a Friday night at 8:30 p.m. (this night in the fall- I would expect to be their biggest night of the week. On the directions- there was an emergency number so we made sure to be there before 9 to avoid any problems). We rang the doorbell before noticing an envelope on the door with our name on it. Don't make that mistake.

The male owner, not sure of his name, instead of welcoming us, proceeded to yell at us that we should have looked at the envelope, that he was about to go to sleep (it was 8:30 p.m.0 and when we asked where to park- he barked at us again to immediately move the car and then stomped away. As an aside- I should also note that this B&B is extremely hard to find in the dark- the directions they provide do not help. The B&B is not located on darlington road. When you make the turn- there is a fork- for either feather hill or indian springs (i think that is to the name). just stay left and go up the hill- not towards feather hill-it is hard to see- the number outside is not 725- i believe it was 17 or 117- on the right side just before the cul de sac. We had to call to find it because it was pitch black. It does not come up on google maps.

The next morning, we hoped it was a fluke, but things continued downhill. When we went down to breakfast, only another couple was there. After another man who worked there told us to sit wherever we want, the male owner came in and yelled at us that the seats we chose threw everything off and we had to move. That was his only appearance at breakfast and we weren't sorry that those were are only two interactions with him of our stay.

As to Ashley, when we were heading out for the day, I simply for an extra pillow. She just stared at me and asked "weren't there four pillows there". I had to provide an explanation which I found irritating- especially when their "handbook" said that if you need an extra pillow just to ask. I've never been questioned as to why I would want an extra pillow. Then, the next morning at breakfast, in front of a full room of guests, she loudly asked me how did the extra pillow work out, which was quite embarrassing. The second night turned out to be quite chilly and there was no information that i could find the room as to turning on the heat- we did not appear to have access. If I was anywhere else, I would have called down and asked for heat- but I decided it wasn't worth dealing with them.

Their attitude towards us put quite a damper on our big weekend away from our without kids. I have stayed at many bed & breakfasts and fine hotels, but have never received this type of treatment.

Room Tip: Top floor was very quiet.

Oh my goodness. When I saw the title of this review my stomach did flip flops like I was on a roller coaster because I was so shocked. We regret that this guest did not have the wonderful experience at Hamanassett that most of our guests have. Obviously, being in the hospitality business and members of both Select Registry and Diamond Collection of Inns, guest service and satisfaction is a priority. I certainly apologize that this reviewer felt we were rude and didn't offer personal service.

Out check in time is posted on our web site and also mentioned in our confirmation letter as 3-7 PM. As we did with these guests, we discuss check in time with guests on the phone before they arrive. Unlike larger inns or hotels we don't have front desk people to take care of this task at night. The last thing we want is for guests to feel stressed that they must arrive by a certain time so we developed a method for late check ins that has worked well for the past 10 years. The husband of this guest had already told us they would be arriving late and we had told him there would be an envelope on the front door. We discussed what time they would like breakfast the following morning and what their hot beverage of choice was. The information in the envelope not only tells guests how to get in and find their room, but gives information such as location of the guest pantry on the second floor, location of complimentary port and sherry on the first floor, and other important information. Most of our guests tell us that our directions posted on our web site are perfect and don't experience the problem finding us these guests did.

The weekend this guest stayed with us the B&B was full and we were expecting a full dining room. While it is normal when guests come down to leave a space between themselves and another couple at the dining room table, this results in the last couple arriving for breakfast being separated so we frequently will ask a guest to change seats so as not to leave a gap. My husband, Glenn, is in the dining room all morning seating and serving breakfast while I'm in the kitchen preparing our award winning breakfasts. He didn't mean to be rude to the guests. It is true he has a strong speaking voice but he certainly didn't yell at them either at breakfast or the night before.

As for my question about the pillow, we have a new housekeeper who is still learing. I simply asked if there were four pillows in the room wanting to be sure the housekeeper was preparing rooms properly. I immediately told her I would be happy to put another pillow in her room. During the mornings when I'm able to get into the dining room, I frequently ask guests how they slept; this is simply being courteous and wanting to be sure they had been comfortable. In her case I asked I asked had the extra pillow been comfortable; I was simply inquiring had she slept well. I certainly didn't mean to embarrass her or come across as being rude. I wish at this time she had told me they had been cold. I could have then told her how to increase the heat on the fireplace in their room and mentioned the additional electric radiator in their closet which she missed seeing. I would have also told her how to increase heat with the knobs on the radiator which is described in the guest book she mentioned above.

To readers of this review I cannot stress strongly enough that all innkeepers want to make your stay special and comfortable. Whether you choose to stay with us at Hamanassett or select another B&B in our beautiful Brandywine Valley, if you have a problem please let us know immediately and give us the opportunity to make it right. It is truly distressing to read after the fact that someone was unhappy here and we are sorry they did not enjoy their stay.
