I have been coming here for 20+ years, in all seasons, with all combinations of travel companions. We are high up in the Best Western priority points system, just from stays here.
Positive Points:
•Location: surrounded by lush green mountains, 360 degrees. This property is in the epicenter of the August Italian festival, and the best takeoff point for the Allegheny National Forest. Stunning old architecture, built during Bradford’s heyday, is in close walking distance.
•Value: Great value! Can negotiate better prices, if you watch specials. (AAA, “skiers special”) Free drink in bar. Free, consistently good, breakfast.
.
•Restaurant quality: depends on the team. We always see who is on duty, when deciding whether to dine here. Can be excellent, or mediocre. Access is handy, especially if you arrive late.
•Availability: When all Ellicottville and Salamanca hotels are full, try here. I was a hero at the Gin Mill in Ellicottville, when a troop of Harley riders found themselves without lodging, and I suggested this place.
Here's the elephant in the room. Watch out for the effects of gas well hydrofracking. Bradford is in the epicenter of the hydrofracking boom, and this is scary. (A drilling technique that injects highly pressurized fracking fluids, which can contain deadly poisons and carcinogens.) The hotel caters to these companies. You see boots in the hall, out of town accents, uniformed men loaded into buses in the morning, and mysterious trucks that do not have to be properly labeled because they are exempt from the Clean Air and Clean Water act. Establishments have the right (and responsibility) to minimize any possible dangers to employees and the other guests, and I trust the Bradford Best Western is responding appropriately. In the meantime, it does not hurt to ask questions. (I would be especially intersted in swimming pool safeguards, given that chlorine does not purify these toxins.) In addition, I suggest:
•Use caution, before letting kids, pregnant women or pets alone in the hall or in the parking lot. I have seen boots, (my thought "Are they contaminated with hydrofracking mud?") sitting in the hall. . .probably worse, if these boots were prior occupants of your room. It only takes a miniscule amount of some of these chemicals to have a carcinogenic effect. Consult with your doctor, if you have any doubt.
•Do not park next to trucks whose contents are not apparent. Take special care if you observe any pools of liquid on the asphalt.
Room Tip: I like the ground floor "in and out" rooms. They have a door 10 feet from your car, and a...
