On a two-week road trip with hubby and teenage son, and this was the one place where we didn't stay in a city. It was meant to be the most unstructured and relaxing part of our trip - and it was! The view is phenomenal. The trail down to the beach is a fairly steep switchback, but it's not too long. Also, there is plenty of beach access nearby up and down Highway 101. (Check out Cape Perpetua, if nothing else.)

The property is a few miles south of Yachats (YA-hots), which adds to its feeling of isolation, even though on the east/back side, it's right off the highway. The front/west side faces nothing but beach, ocean, birds, and sea mammals. Hope we can go back again someday.

Terrific location, amazing price, our new favorite getaway. We are nuts for tide pools and this place essentially has a private cache on it's beach. We counted literally dozens of starfish at lowtide.

We spent 3 nights in the Shag's Nest Cottage, and really enjoyed it. The view was spectacular, the cottage was simple but comfy, and the beach below had lots of excellent tidepools and hardly any other people. There's lots of good hiking nearby, and Yachats is close enough that it's easy to drive there for dinner or groceries.

The Shag's Nest is the separate cottage from the main lodging at Ocean Haven. It's tiny, rustic and absolute heaven if you enjoy a cozy, personal, unpretentious cottage with amazing views. The wood burning fireplace sets just in front of the queen size bed (which has lovely Pendleton blankets). Two portable rockers can be placed in front of the fire and next to the window, so if it's stormy, you can relax by the fire and stare at the sea. Christie and Bill have always been lovely during my stays. Amicable and friendly, they leave vacationers to themselves, but are happy to help and have welcoming personalities. One of the things travelers may overlook when staying at Ocean Haven is that it is an ecological resort. Recycling, composting and a conscience for the environment are all part of the stay. Proceeds from your room charges go to various conservation projects as well.
All in all though, the Ocean Haven is lovely, and the Shag's Nest is the best!
