“A Gem on the Oregon Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

My wife made the reservation to stay at this lodge and, from the looks of it on the internet, I wasn't too excited about it. Boy was I surprised! We have lived in Oregon for 50 years and have stayed in dozens of places on the coast. This is by far our favorite. The owners were fantastic hosts. The rooms (we had two for our party) were spotlessly clean. The location is superb. After 50 years we are tired of staying in ocean front units with the sound of the ocean pounding in our ears. This lodge is on Nehalem Bay and is very quiet. I sat on the lodge's private dock, which was about 50 feet from my door, and watched a dozen different species of birds, including herons, bitterns, and cormorants. There were also lots of watercraft to watch including fishing boats, kayaks and canoes. Wheeler is a small town with limited options for eating, but my wife is a vegetarian and found food to her liking. I had no trouble finding excellent food to eat. In summary--a gem on the Oregon Coast!

“Cozy room with a lovely setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

This place was really relaxing. We had the "Ebb Tide" room, which had a small fireplace, a little kitchenette, and an awesome jacuzzi tub. No view (except for from the hot tub), but a beautifully decorated, comfy room with dishes and snacks. The owners were really nice too. The setting is really lovely on the bay; next time we'll try the kayaks.

Room Tip: Ebb tide was great, but no view. The huge jacuzzi suites on the end look really nice, but are more...

“A unique, welcoming place in an incredible Oregon Coast setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

This is a magical spot on Nehalem Bay. Wheeler is already situated on a part of the bay that has views, the calmness of the river, and all kinds of wildlife teeming on display. While the exterior of the buildings look like a roadside motel, the interiors are spectacular; roomy and comfortable. There's an upper deck above the river leading down to a dock on the river with Adirondack chairs and picnic tables to while away time on the river watching the tides and fish leaping.

If you stay two nights, kayaks are available for free. This past weekend we paddled up to Nehalem on the high tide and then drifted back down on the river current. We saw egrets, numerous heron, aforementioned leaping salmon and foxes.

Pat and Tracy are wonderful hosts; available to provide the next morning's complimentary breakfast and suggestions for what to do. They maintain a huge video library for the inroom DVD players along with games, etc. At the same time, they are not at all the hovering hosts that drive us away from B&Bs. They welcome you and help you enjoy the beautiful setting.

Wheeler itself is only a bit more than a hamlet. There are a handful of restaurants with their own characteristics and a range of alternatives to the usual coast seafood menus. Manzanita is minutes away. While Wheeler is on a bay, Manzanita's beach is close by, as is Nehalem Bay State Park. Meanwhile, you can enjoy fishing and crabbing in Nehalem Bay.

Room Tip: Try for the Glory Suite with its own deck overlooking the water.

“Nice and clean, but a little cramped for family with teens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

Stayed here 3 nights over Labor Day weekend. Me, husband and 2 teenagers. We had the "Suite Sea" room which has 2 bedrooms with queens and a sofa bed in the main room. This is a great location if you plan to fish and crab, which was the purpose of our trip. It has a private dock to keep your boat and the marina is next door. The hotel itself is very clean and the owners are super nice. Each room is decorated uniquely and the special touches are nice. Our only complaint about the room is the main area has a sofa and little table with 2 folding chairs, so it's not possible for a family to sit and relax in the evening. One night we wanted to watch a college football game and another night a movie, and there is just not the space to do this, Other than that, the beds are comfy and again, this is a very clean, homey place. Wheeler itself is lacking in places to eat. The Tsunami Cafe across the street has great reviews, but when we walked in, it was disgustingly filthy looking, so we went across the street to the Sunset Grill where we had a fantastic dinner and excellent service. Everything else was closed for the weekend, which we found strange, being a holiday weekend on the coast...and the only shops in Wheeler are antique stores. We drove to Seaside and Cannon beach one day and there's lots of fun shopping and places to eat in both towns. Overall, this is a good place to stay, as long as you plan on fishing a lot and driving to do anything else.

“charming and outstanding service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

This was a lovely place to stay. Our room was medium-sized but full of nice touches--a Jacuzzi, fridge, microwave, etc. The setting right on the bay in a charming little coastal town was excellent. The couple who run the lodge were exceptionally helpful, outgoing and accommodating. (Example: I forgot an extra pillow we had brought into the room when I checked out. I got a phone call about half an hour later, while we were still in the area and I was able to stop back and pick it up.) Highly recommended.
