“Dated and Poor Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

As we were checking in some guy in the bar was making barfing noises and the girls at the front desk thought it was funny. They were more interested in talking to him and each other than they were in checking us in. The rooms are dated although ours was very clean. The resturant is dated and has an odd menu. I'm not sure many people in Oregon eat alligator.

We just needed a clean place to stay for one night and it was OK for that, but I wouldn't book a longer stay.

“Inconvenient”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

Stayed at the Shilo to attend a nearby concert. We got there early to hang out by the pool. We were not allowed to check into our room until 4:00 - huh? So my wife and I had to change into our swimsuits in the public restroom down the hall - After sitting in the sun we felt a dip in the pool was in order, well, the pool (outdoor) had algea in it, the steps were slimy, so no dip. Instead, we waited in the lobby with other customers until 4:00. The whole experience was VERY inconvenient.

Room Tip: Call ahead and see if the 4:00 check in is still policy.

“Terrible Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

I can echo the terrible service that the last 2 reviews mentioned. I showed up at the hotel around 2 and was told they couldn't check in until 4. Arrived back around 3:30 after struggling to kill time and was met with no one at the front desk, but a lobby full of disgruntled hotel guests in the same predicament. We were told that the "computer system doesn't allow check in's until 4". This is either a lie, or a terrible policy by the Shilo chain. Either way it has to be addressed as this type of service is horrendous. No wonder this was the only hotel in town with vacancies on a concert night!

The rooms are standard, the bed was very uncomfortable, and the AC unit was SO loud I chose to sleep in the heat.

Upon checkout, once again as previously mentioned in another review, the clerk honestly couldn't even be bothered to make eye contact.

With proper management and customer service, and a little sprucing up, this hotel would be worth the $159 a night. In it's current state, I would never stay there again.

The only upside was the service in the lounge/ restaurant.

Room Tip: If you are attending a concert at Maryhill Winery, stay at the Celilo Inn instead: I was tipped off...

General Manager, General Manager at Shilo Inn The Dalles, responded to this review
3 October 2011
Dear Darr-Mac,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience. I apologize you didn’t feel you had the customer service that Shilo Inns prides itself on giving all guests. We always try to accommodate guest needs and check-in guests upon arrival. On that Saturday our merchant services went down and we could not process credit cards & at the same time our reservation system froze. This is not an excuse I just feel that we did not explain correctly about the delay. I have addressed this issue with our staff and will have on going training on communication & how to better serve our guests in the future.

I know that if you allow us another chance we can certainly do better in providing you a positive experience. All feedback is valuable to us, we will take this into account moving forward.

Sincerely,
Kelly Margheim – General Manager

“Unhappy with customer service, outdoor pool gross and not maintained”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

This hotel has average rooms. Clean and plain. This is the 2nd time we've stayed here, and this time we were very disappointed with the customer service. We arrived mid-afternoon and was told that check-in time was 4 pm, and to check back. We checked about 3:15 and was told that their policy was to not check anyone into their rooms until 4 pm, even if the rooms were clean and ready! We travel a lot and I have never had this happen before. Even though most hotels have a check-in time, they always check to see if your rooms are ready, and if so, they check you in early. There were several parties lined up with their luggage in the lobby, while three clerks waited behind the desk doing nothing, and turning people away, saying they couldnt not check anyone in til 4. Of course, when it was time to check in, they had a line-up of unhappy people. It would make more sense to check them in as rooms become available. We had an event to attend, and basically ended up not having any time in our room to prepare. Also, our friends asked if they could use the outdoor pool while we had to wait to be checked in, and were directed to a public restroom down the hall to change clothes. When arriving at the pool, they discovered that the water was green and full of algae, with slimy green steps. We purposely booked a hotel with an outdoor pool, and were extremely disappointed with the lack of maintanance, which made it basically unusable!
Our room ended up being clean and quiet for a good night's sleep, and a plus is the free (included) breakfast in the morning. But upon check-out, the clerk basically just printed us off a receiept....no greeting, no inquiry as to how our stay was, etc. Very much lacking in customer service. I have contacted hotel management with our concerns and are hoping to hear a response. Unfortunately, we probably wont return unless they do something to compensate for our poor experience.

“Ok Place for One Night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

My husband and I spent one night at the Shilo after attending a concert at the nearby Maryhill Winery. We didn't want to make a 2 hour drive back to Portland at night, so we needed a place to stay close to the concert venue. Most hotels in the area were full by the time we got the tickets so I got the last room at the Shilo when calling earlier in the week. I found a rate of $109 on the Shilo website so when I called they matched it after first quoting me a $149/night rate. The rooms are definitely NOT worth that amount.
The reservations person told me we could show up between 3 and 4 to check in, but when we arrived, we were told at the front desk that they wouldn't talk to us until 4:00, and we had to wait like all the other guests sitting around the lobby. We went to McDonalds next door to eat, and came back just after 4:00, and stood in line for 15 - 20 minutes until we could get checked in. There were only 2 desk clerks and one was busy answering the phone.
The room was very small, much smaller than most hotel rooms, but it was clean with a queen bed, tv, microwave, fridge, and small bathroom with sink in the main room. There is an open "closet" rack and a hair dryer. Decor is simple but tasteful. The bedding was very thin and if the room had been cold we would have needed an extra blanket, which there wasn't in the room. The mattress and pillows were ok and we had a decent night's sleep.
Biggest negative was the fact that the room doors must be slammed to close them. At first I thought people in our hall were being rude when doors slammed loudly, but it turned out we had to slam ours too when closing it. The hotel needs to fix this problem so doors fit better.
Positives: The hot cooked to order breakfast at their restaurant in the morning was good. You have limited choices for the "free" breakfast but it was filling and tasty. It definitely beat the normal continental breakfasts at other hotels. We didn't have to wait to be seated or served and food came quickly. I was surprised since the hotel was full. Service was pleasant and the view was wonderful of the river and dam.
The grounds around the hotel, which is right on the Columbia River, are nicely maintained and pleasant to explore. There are some historic 1800s buildings next door, and we checked out the Native American fishing platforms along the river bank. We loved the setting and view.
IF we ever stayed there again, we'd ask for a larger room with a balcony or patio, which some rooms have. I'd check out the nearby Comfort Inn first, though, or one of the other local hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony or patio and a view of the river.
