Whilst the bones of The Lodge at Suttle Lake are good, the staff - especially Cindy the manager, leave a lot to be desired.
We live locally and have had meals at the Boatshed restaurant at Suttle Lake over the years. For a 50th birthday celebration and wanting a quiet retreat, we chose a cabin at Suttle Lake. Our daughter drove from Bend after work one afternoon to look at the cabins to find which would be suitable. The manager did not allow her to look at any of the cabins, even though there were vacancies. The condescending tone and manner of the manager to our daughter, should have been a red flag to us.
Nevertheless, a cabin was booked but the day before we were to arrive, a friend called to tell us Zingdealz had a half price deal going at Suttle Lake at the moment. It was exactly what we had wanted - a 2 night stay - but this deal was 2 for the price of 1 with a bottle of champagne thrown in. Another deal on at the same time through Living Social also included a massage! The guests we talked with were told of it when they called to book a stay at the Lodge.
We originally only wanted a 2 night stay but we had been offered a 3 night stay for the price of 2 (without the other perks). We called to see if we could swap our deal to the 2 night stay deal being offered and the friendly (new) staff front desk girl checked with the manager (Cindy?) - who said there was nothing to be done. Regardless of the deal, our booking was made and cancellation required 72hrs notice.
We were disappointed but were looking forward to our stay regardless.
The first night my daughter and I were staying together. We arrived in the darkand found the outside light of the cabin by the stairs was out, and so it made unloading the car tricky. We notified they young guy at the front desk but he did not tell housekeeping. When housekeeping did arrive to see if we needed anything, we asked had the front desk sent them for the light and they said no. However, they took care of it right away.
The cabin was well situated, well built and quiet. However, as we went to load the fridge we found old waffles inside. The freezer had a thick buildup of ice so that it was a squeeze to get our frozen goods in. We suspect the icebuildup made the fridge run loudly most of our stay. We did not notify housekeeping of the freezer problem since we were not leaving the cabin and had a lot of food in the fridge and did not want them unplugging the fridge to defrost it - let alone deal with the mess and hours it might take to defrost the freezer.
We went to put the fan on the ceiling on and noticed it had a thick crust of dust on each blade. We debated about putting it on to keep the hot air from staying up at the high roofline or spreading the dust about.....it is in a hard position to clean - but is do-able!
The toilet flapper had an issue and if you forgot to jiggle it, it ran continuously. The light in the cabin is very dim ( no doubt for ambiance) but makes it very hard for cooking. This was compounded by the fact that over the stove is a microwave with an under light that should have lit up the stovetop. This light didn't work and the housekeeping staff said they were on order but hadn't come in.
It would have been nice to have a bedside table and lamp at each side of the bed in the main bedroom. There was a table and lamp on one side only.
The last morning we went to use the BBQ that was supplied, but found old foil with food on it in there, which changed our mind about barbequeing.
There is a terse note at the sink reminding you that if you don't wash your own dishes there would be a $50 charge added to your bill on checkout. At other resorts, the notes usually remind you "Please wash the dishes", or in their folder of information, state that excessive washing of dishes will result in an extra charge. No such politeness at Suttle Lake.
Beware!
On checkout, my husband asked to speak to the manager in private(Cindy) and pointed out the issues we had. She was coldly rude and offered no apology. She did ask why the freezer situation wasn't mentioned when we saw it and my husband told her we wanted a quiet retreat to relax in we didn't want a fridge being defrosted with our food in it- let alone the messit would make as it all defrosted ! A simple inspection of the fridge by housekeeping or inspector should be routine when guests check out - not something that needs to be done while guests are there!
Cindy said she would make an adjustment on the bill and her "adjustment" was taking the $50 cleaning fee OFF the bill which was AUTOMATICALLY added in before anyone had inspected the cabin!!
The owner is responsible for the tone set at Suttle Lake and we can only surmise from other comments on Cindy's helpfulness, that Cindy is burned out or is preferential in her treatment of guests according to whatever her particular criteria for a guest is. Regardless, as customers we should have been treated at least with respect and an apology.
The high standard of customer service we expected from Suttle Lake wasn't there, the young front desk staff that didn't follow through and seemed intent on playing on the computer together during the day and the very rude manager that wasn't at all interested in the how our stay was, indicates that there have been better times at Suttle Lake Lodge and the owner's skimping is showing in the staffing. It might explain the high management turnover in the past few years.
On a high note, we did eat at the restaurant and enjoyed the knowledge and friendliness of our server - Spring, and the fresh approach to food by Chef Corey.
But we won't be returning again to Suttle Lake Lodge and we will definitely not recommend staying there to our local friends or international guests.

It is always with a heavy heart that I hear about us missing the mark with a guest. We do have a caring staff that is constantly challenged to see their work environment through new eyes, through the guests eyes in order to better serve the guest and provide a positive experience.
We have checklists and procedures to ensure much of what you experienced does not happen, and though we have a few new housekeepers, there is no excuse for the details and glaring items that where missed in your cabin. I have walked through myself in the cabins and have mentioned items to our staff so that they see the level of detail I expect and our guests like you expect. It looks like we have more work to do in order for these things not to fall through the 3 checks that should catch these things.
Cyndi and I will be going over your experience with the staff, as well as we will talk about your experience with you personally. Again it is my goal to listen to every guest and put myself in their shoes-I expect the same from all my managers and staff. I am sorry if you did not feel as if we listened to your challenges and empathized.
I know that our staff tries to react very quickly to guest issues, and I am glad that housekeeping was able to fix the light for you, often times our maintenance person is called by the front desk for those items, and that might be why the housekeeping staff did not hear of the issue. There are also reasons for not being able to change promotions around, due to our partnership agreement with Zingdeals. If it is 100% our promotion, it is much easier to change promotions to suit our guests needs/wants.
All in all, I am just writing to let you know that I am sorry for your lackluster experience with our customer service during your 50th anniversary. I am glad that you were able to enjoy your meal in the Boathouse Restaurant and were able to have a good experience there.
I understand that we have not met your expectations during your stay, but I would love to speak with you further if you like about your stay. I am always available. Just ask for Curtis Coronado when you call or my direct extension is 206 off the line.
Sorry to hear about your stay, I will be following up on all of your comments. Have a happy holiday with your family.
