My first trip, ever, to the Oregon coast. Seaside, Oregon is one of the first resort communities that you encounter, when coming from the north. As it was late in the day, on a rainy Monday, I had hoped for a deal on an oceanfront room (presuming a high vacancy rate). I was wrong. Oceanfront rooms are expensive - duh - and everything (within our budget) was booked. We were, however, offered a fair deal on accommodations at the Seashore Inn on the Beach.
The main hotel is set up, right on the beach promenade. There are two additional buildings, plus the building housing the pool and hot tub, behind it and separated by the hotel parking lot. We were offered an available room in one of these units for one night and would be transferred to one of the two ground floor oceanfront units the next day. We took the deal.
Our first room brought to mind what a resort cabin might have looked like in the sixties or seventies. Everything was old. Not dated. Not antique. Just old. Still, everything worked. No a/c but, as it turned out, none was needed. Where, in other situations I might have been upset given the price of the room, we were pleased to be so close to the beach and able to relax and look around this very pleasant town. The bed was ok. Efficiency bathroom.
Seaside appears to be a town in transition. While there are still a number of the old school seaside attractions - arcades, candy stores and specialty shops - there are numerous timeshares and condo's already springing up. This looks to have been a wonderful place, for many years, for families to return to, again and again. There's still lots, but it looks to be changing.
After exploring, on our first full day, we returned to our oceanfront unit. As noted, there are only two on the ground floor. The room was larger than our previous one. Newer furniture and fixtures, as well. Everything worked great and, as with the previous room, was clean.
We had a patio that allowed us to "people watch" as folks strolled past on the busy promenade. Then, they started to look back. It was time to check out the great beach, anyway!
Lots of families at this hotel. The pool & hot tub were well used. We looked in, but didn't use them. The bed was only ok. Maybe I'm fussy, but I like a nice mattress.
The staff are really great. I think - not certain - that it might be family-run. In any event, they were very gracious and seem to know their main clientele's (families) needs and continue to remain affordable when so much else has become out of reach.
