A great place to stay if you like the smell of stale body odor in the nicely appointed guest robes---you can even purchase your own in the hotel lobby!
Go to fill up the spa and you may wish you'd brought along your bottle of Clorox.
Open the window for a little fresh air and enjoy the loud hum of all of the motors to keep the place running.
The dive in to the bed and once again you have the same odor that is on the robes!
And the staff behind the reception desk? Snootier than you can get. And all this in great DOWNTOWN SALEM.

Management response from scottSalemOr, General Manager

Dear Creativenot,

I would like to thank you for your feedback about our hotel. We take every comment, positive or constructive seriously. Your appraisal has allowed our housekeeping staff and myself to review all of our procedures to ensure that whatever occurred with your stay was indeed an isolated circumstance and in no way a reflection of the experience all of our other guests have felt about their experience. I would certainly welcome the opportunity to discuss the procedures we have in place to assure you that it would not occur again. I can be reached at the hotel 503-540-7800.

We strive to have every guest leave feeling they've had an experience worth everything we've charged and more.

DH and I stayed on Christmas Eve night. We live in Salem-had bad weather and just wanted to stare at different walls since we couldn't travel to see family. Loved everything about hotel-from the pleasant desk clerks, to the room, and our meal at Bently Grill was superb. The free breakfast was excellent.
My folks came to town last night-we recommended the Grand Phoenix to them and they had a great stay too. Dad found the bed a little hard-but thought the hotel was very nice. I made a special request of the front desk-a special greeting message be left in their room upon check in. The went above and beyond. I will continue to recommend this facility to anyone. I may even have a few more nights away from home when I need to feel pampered,

My husband and I (age 53 and 63 but definately not old [-]) chose to stay here as the Salem Convention Center is connected. It was the perfect choice. Beautiful, clean and classy from the lobby to our room, we loved almost everything about our 2 night stay.

Check in was a breeze, fast, friendly and efficient. The parking garage below is free however the spots are small if you have a large vehicle. You go up one elevator to the main lobby then a short walk to the hotel elevators gets you to your room. Not at all difficult or complicated.

The room was nice sized, great tv, great bed, couch, FREE wi-fi, good heating/cooling, great sheets and pillows. The bathroom is not huge but works just fine with upscale soap slabs from the store down the block. The hairdryers are 1600 but a tad wimpy. There is no ventilation in the bathroom so it fogs up. The plumbing pipes are a tad noisy from the upstairs people but not Bates Motel noisy.
These points on the bathroom makes my review a 98 instead of a 100 percent approval. Next time we will stay on the top floor and let our water go down the pipes to the floors below.

Breakfast in the morning is in a large room next to the Bentley Grill (we didnt try the grill but others in the elevators and in the conference had and were favorable.). While not extravagant nor on the par with Embassy Suites, there were hot scrambled eggs, sausage links and hot waffles along with the normal oatmeal, breads and fruit. We didnt go hungry. The coffee was spectacular.

Lovely hotel. Price for us was $117 which we felt was fair for the property. Would definitely stay there again.

The Phoenix Grand Hotel in Salem, Oregon is the place our company chooses to host training programs for groups of 50 - 60 participants from all over North America eleven months out of the year. "The block" as it is known contains the luxurious Phoenix Grand Hotel, the Salem Conference Center and Bentley's Grill (one of Salem's best restaurants) all under one roof. The staff of all three businesses treat guests with utmost courtesy and genuine helpfulness. Our observations are not just based on a one time experience, but from doing business with all three on a monthly basis since they opened operations. Whether you are a tourist, traveling on business, or in town for a special event, the Phoenix Grand will treat you as a royal guest. There are no stupid questions and no needs that the staff will not try to meet or reasonably accommodate. The Phoenix Grand Hotel meets a wide variety of needs. It is just as comfortable being family friendly to serving dignitaries and heads of state. It is the place to stay in Salem, Oregon. I highly recommend it without reservation.

We stayed at the phoenix grand hotel on October 9th 2008 on a business trip. There seemed to be mostly business travellers staying at the hotel, we stayed on a thursday night. I originally called to make reservations and this was a seemless proccess. The lobby was extra large and elegantly decorated. The gentleman at the desk who checked us in was very helpful and informed us of the many features of the hotel; free parking, breakfast, internet, and well apointed rooms. My wife and I loved the onsite resturant, i forget the name. Every employee we encountered was very nice and smiling. Maybe it's something in salems water...:)
All in all we had a great stay and will return again when time permits.
