“Great concept, but falls short”

Booked online while being skeptical after readings reviews. Got to the hotel, wrong room, but was moved to another room. Hotel staff is great and very accomodating.
Room is a different story. It's an old "motel" that they tried to revive. Rooms (both) have a really funky smell, old carpeting, and cheap/beat up furniture. Dont get me wrong..they tried to tastefully decorate, but both room I saw seemed "very used". The hot water issues others have complained about..didnt have them (and I actually love taking long hot shower..that's my morning fix, not coffee) so that worked out well for me. The music..never heard it from my room! The Doug Fir lounge..decent food, great service - but they no longer provide room service as listed in the room directory book.
All in all, I'm still here (decided not to move to another hotel) on business, and it's ok..but wouldn't come back. Easier to just not switch hotels at this point.

Dear Shawn B, Thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughts on your stay with us. I am glad to hear that our staff made you feel welcome and took care of your needs! Sorry to hear that your room(s) looked "used", our vintage/ retro style while cool and intentional can certainly seem a bit "used". I would really like to get more information so I can address any smell issues that exist in that room, and to make sure that the carpeting gets cleaned as it was recently installed and sounds like had some spots. In the end I'm glad that you enjoyed your showers, and that noise wasn't an issue as the reviews led you to believe (you can't believe everything you read). Ultimately, we strive to provide an experience that leaves you wanting to come back, and I'm sorry that we did not achieve this for you. It would be my pleasure to have you come back and stay with us so that you can experience the Jupiter as so many others have. Please contact me directly anytime to set this up.

“Boutique hotel w/ great restaurant/bar and sense of whimsy!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

This hotel was super cute! I was in Portland on business but immediately wished I'd brought my spouse. I loved the restaurant/bar with its huge fireplace, great menu and interesting cocktails! I highly recommend. Might even try to find a reason to visit Portland again (maybe when it's slightly warmer), just so I can stay here. Wouldn't recommend for family trips though, it's a little noisy at night. But young, hip couples (or even older and still hip couples) would like this place.

“You know it's a bad sign when...”

1. THEY HAVE EARPLUGS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND - AND - you have to use them. It's not a hotel... it's a motel. There are people walking around outside due to the bar and club. You can hear the pounding of the stereo speakers they play throughout the complex in your room. People are so drunk they try to go into the wrong rooms.
2. THEY HAVE CONDOMS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND... personally, I prefer chocolates. This dump looks like the place that rents by the hour... and they have the supplies handy too.
3. THEY LEAVE HAIR ON YOUR BEDSHEETS, PILLOWS, TOWELS, SINK, TOILET, BATHTUB... must I go on? They changed me to another room... had the same long black hair on the sheets. Our party rented several rooms... EVERYONE had this problem. The front desk claimed the maid wears a hat... we saw her... not wearing a hat.
4. YOU ARE OVERPOWERED BY THE SMELL OF SPRAY FRANGRANCE... to cover up the marijuana smell.
5. YOU CAN'T WALK ON THE CARPET... because it's not really carpet and is so scratchy, it hurts your feet - bring your slippers!
6. THERE IS NO WHERE TO HANG OR PUT YOUR CLOTHES... yep, no dresser, no drawers, no closet, nothing to hand your clothes or put your suitcase

This place was a filthy, loud dumpy motel, that someone had great marketing skills with. Bait and switch.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms. Bottom floor would be the worst... squeaky floors on the 2nd floor.

Dear Midwest Travelor1234, I am very sorry to hear that you had so many issues during your stay and I wish that you had brought these to my attention while with us so that we could have taken care of them and ensured your stay was truly Jupiter Hotel caliber. It is no secret that we have a busier-than-average property, and as our reputation precedes us, we are always just a little left of the middle when it comes to "hotel norms." As most of our guests will attest, we provide a fun and quirky environment, albeit one that may not appeal to everyone, and I am sorry that you did not enjoy it. We can, however, customize your stay so that certain things are more to your liking. Please let us know your requests ahead of time and we can have them changed by your arrival date. We do hold ourselves to the highest cleanliness standards and as a general rule pass with flying colors. That we did not achieve this in your eyes is regrettable and I truly wish I had the opportunity to remedy this at the time of your stay. I would like to thank you for your comments and welcome you back to the hotel anytime so that you can experience what so many others have come to love. Please contact me at your convenience and we can make arrangements for your next stay -- on us, of course.

“Hmm, not that funky”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

Frankly, the overall experience was poor. We are a young couple who enjoy funky, fun hotels. While Jupiter promises similar, it seems that they spend more time telling us their funky, and less time on the important functionality of the space. The wall mural was chinzy (bamboo, really?), the lack of any drawer space, the fact the toilet did not work from the first minute we arrived, the stupid neon blue lights that glow into the rooms at night, the construction noise from 8am, the attempt to recharge a card despite making advance payment, and many more stuff ups, all made this experience a great big sigh for us. Not funky + fun; we experienced the Jupiter as dysfunctional, pretentious crap. We were promised a Metro chill side experience, instead we got an 80s style run-down hotel let-down. And to top it off, it was one of the most expensive hotels in Portland. I know Portlanders pride themselves on not giving a crap, but the money walks elsewhere when not giving a crap comes with not giving a great experience either.

“Affordable Boutique Hotel on the Hip Eastide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

A great, hip designed hotel for your dollar on the hip East Burnside minutes from Downtown. The rooms are designed well - but without pretension or impossible amenities that you can't use. (Instead - very practical amenities: bike rentals, laundry, etc) Also, they make your stay comfortable and cozy - not minimalist as it's mandated by Dwell magazine (ahem - cough, Ace Hotel). Bedding and linens were just right, and being a more mid-century building, I wasn't as drafty as I have been in some converted hotels.
In terms of service, I found the staff extremely welcoming and accommodating. They upgraded me to a room on the quiet side at no extra charge. I will stay here again!

Room Tip: Do your homework: the rooms that are next to the Doug Fir lounge are NOT on the quiet side. Be sure...
