“Appearances can be deceiving. Discourteous staff, unclean rooms, visitor fees after 9pm...”
Overall the Briarwood Suites looks like a nice hotel with great rates. However with low rates, but looks aren't always everything.
The Good: Nice layout of rooms, free movie channels, comfortable beds, rooms look nice overall, free onsite parking, free wireless internet.
The Bad: Located a few blocks away from an area of Portland that is currently being 'cleaned up' by the police (vicinity near the cross between SE 82nd and Powell is notorious in Portland for drugs, prostitution, violence, etc.). The hallways smelled heavily of cigarette smoke. The room numbers on the doors were strips of duct tape adhered to the door with numbers written on them. When arriving into the room we found a sock and a disposable lighter under the bed. The heater was below average which isn't good when facing 33 degree weather. We were advised at 8:30pm that visitors (family) would have to leave the premises before 9:00pm or they would have to pay an extra $15 per visitor to even be in the room after that time.
Now to be clear, I am writing on behalf of my family, who stayed one night at the Briarwood Suites. That's all they could take. My parents and two teenage siblings had just arrived after a long drive and promptly took showers and watched TV (at a low noise level). None of them smoke, they are a quiet family and there was no alcohol involved whatsoever. My wife, newborn daughter and I were visiting them in the hotel. We kept conversation down and my daughter hardly cried and mostly slept the whole time we were there. At about 8:30 pm, the desk clerk phoned up my mother to advise her of a visitor charge and its details. With family visiting on very limited time and with me wanting to spend as much time with them as I could get, I decided to inquire about this fee and a possibility of a waiver. I walked to the front desk and as I entered, the desk clerk was watching some sort of rap performance on the lobby television. He quickly dropped the volume on the TV and responded to me. I calmly advised him that I am visiting my family (the hotel guests) and that I live nearby. I asked to see if there was any way to waive the visitor fee and his response was, "Well why would we do that? Explain." in a rude tone of voice. So I told him that we are just visiting and that we're not intending to stay the night. He said that the charge was due to exceeding room occupancy and that they can't allow visitors to be in the rooms unless they pay the $15 per visitor and that they would need identification as well. Frustrated, I responded by saying, "Alright, thank you" and proceeded to walk out of the lobby. As I was leaving, he promptly and very rudely reminded me of what time it was and how much time I have left before I must be out of the room. I thanked him again as I left the lobby. Now first of all, there were four adults, two teenagers and an infant in the room (6 & 1/2 people if you will) so I don't believe that maximum occupancy and fire code are even a valid reason for 'evicting' visitors. Second, if it is true, however, it seems illegal to take money as a business to 'turn a blind eye' if a guest is knowingly breaking fire code. And third, we were not doing anything that was breaking the law, (potentially) causing harm or damage to anyone (including their property), refusing to pay, or were even discourteous to anyone in any way so I don't see the justification for him to be as rude as he was to me, who was only asking if it was possible to waive the fee. Not only am I frustrated that I lost valuable time spent with my family, but I am disappointed with this business deciding to run itself in this fashion.
If you are in the area and need a place to stay, I would highly suggest that you look somewhere else. The hotel itself may look nice (I used to suggest that other family look into staying here because of location and rate but will NEVER recommend it to anyone again) but there is more to a hotel than the way it looks.
