Chose this hotel for a spur of the moment weekend trip to Portland while staying in Seattle on business. On the hotel's website (not the official Marriott website), I found a link to a great deal -- Portland Perks. This rate isn't offered through Marriott, but though a separate organization. Since I wasn't familiar with the organization, I called the hotel who verified that its been in business for over 27 years and very reliable. Since my package came with free parking ($30/night value) and $15 per day breakfast credit at the independent restaurant attached to the hotel, it brought the effective room rate down to less than $80/night. Additionally, it included a great coupon filled with lots of local restaurants and venues. (There are Portland Perks deals at a lot of other area hotels.)
This was my first non-business trip to Portland so the first time I had an opportunity to do any exploring. Even though the weather was miserable (even started snowing on Sunday!), I had a great time and am looking forward to my next visit.
I concur with what everyone else has said about the great location and interesting style of the hotel. Warm, helpful staff. Picked up a last minute ticket to hear Joshua Bell with the Portland Orchestra -- great music in a lovely historic concert hall.
Can't say enough good things about the Original! On my first morning, I had the best omelet of my entire life -- goat cheese and wild mushrooms, cooked to perfection! Came with a very large serving of fresh salad and toast with yummy jam. It was hard not to order the same thing the next morning, but the yogurt with berries and house-made granola was a hit. You expect good coffee in Portland and the Original lived up to this reputation. On both mornings, I have experienced great service. On the first morning, when the hostess was leading me to a table in the back of the restaurant, I asked to be seated by the window where the light was better for reading my newspaper. As we walked over to the new table, I noticed that I was being seated in an areas where the assigned server was very busy and hoped that my request wasn't further upsetting the balance. I loved her response -- in a bright, chipper voice she said "No worries. All of our servers are awesome. They can handle anything!"
I'll probably continue to sample other hotels in Portland, not because there was anything lacking in the Courtyard, but no matter where I stay, I'll come back to the Original!
