“Unsanitary”

I used the Priceline "name your price" deal for a Portland hotel and was given this one. Upon arrival, we were offered a room that was a former smoking room; however, we declined that and were given the room next to it -- room 58, and I was charged $20 more per night. It was a Friday night, and they were completely booked too. We went up to the room and found gashes in the dry wall, the shower did not look like it had been cleaned in months either. One of my friends who is an apartment manager in Seattle, immediately stripped the bed of it's sheets and examined for bed bugs and fleas, and found feces and shells of bed bugs, which meant that the motel has bed bugs. The room also reeked of cigarrette smoke. We went downstairs, asked that the extra $40 transaction be voided and complained about how unsanitary the room was, and even showed the manager. We called back the next day and another employee asked us what had happened and said that the manager had just put a note that we found the beds unsatisfactory, which doesn't even cover the problem we had with the room. I would not recommend anyone stay here. I have filed a complaint with priceline and encourage you to find a room somewhere else even if you have to spend a couple more bucks.

Dear hikerchick7:

We wish to express our appreciation to you for taking the time to share feedback about our property. We were disappointed to hear that you were unhappy with the room you were provided. We believe that each one of our guests deserves to stay in a room which is both clean and comfortable, and we regret we were unable to meet your needs on your recent visit to Portland. We hope that you will choose to return to our exciting city in the future even if you will be staying somewhere else. We thank you again for your review.

There are a few points we would like to clarify for our TripAdvisor readers:

Priceline guarantees a smoking room and offers the option of requesting a non-smoking room if one should be available. However Priceline does not guarantee a guest will receive a non-smoking room.

Like most hotels we charge according to room occupancy. The reservation we received from Priceline indicated that the guest had requested a room with a single bed for two adults for two nights. It is our policy to charge a per person per night fee for any additional guests. Since at check in there were in fact four adults and not two it became necessary to assess the extra $40 in charges. They were also given a free upgrade to a room with two beds to accommodate the extra people.

When the guest expressed dissatisfaction with the first room they were checked in to we moved them to a new one. Unfortunately they did not find the new room to their liking either. Since the hotel was near capacity that day and we had no other rooms onsite to move them to we offered to transfer the guest to our larger suites property a short drive away at no additional charge but they elected not to. The guest chose to leave and was given a full refund.

After receiving a complaint of bed bugs the property management immediately had our contracted pest control service out to the hotel to do a thorough inspection. When the technician arrived he went over the room inch by inch and couldn’t find any evidence of past or current bed bug activity. We asked him to do a proactive treatment of the entire property anyway as a precaution.

“Conveniently located, the Banfield is a bargain.”

We typically stay at the Banfield when needing overnight accommodations near downtown Portland and have done so for years. We are consistently treated well and any problems are quickly and gracefully handled. We are aware of slow progress in replacing worn-out fabrics, particularly carpet and most particularly carpeting in the public areas. Updating bathrooms was a big improvement, as was the addition of microwave and refrigerator. We have tolerance for the little things, such as only one hand towel for two people and a queen-size blanket on a king-size bed, unless they persist. Bigger problems we report to the desk; they have been corrected as well as could be with available resources.

Compared with other in-town accommodations, the Banfield is a bargain.

“The nose knows”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2009

We stayed at the Banfield while we worked a trade show in Portland. The first thing we noticed was that the whole motel smelled like urine. You know a hotel has a problem with smells when all of the vacant rooms have their windows open in order to air them out. As we checked in, a gentlman of a less than reputable nature offered the management $20 for every time they let him use their phone, which he had taken outside to conduct his 'business'. Management was nice, but maybe that was the problem, as there were broken down bicycles and shopping carts in the parking lot and near-homeless people hanging around the motel. I say near-homeless because the motel offers monthly rates. When we got to the room, it was clean enough, except for the urine smell and the suspicious stain (looked like it had been a blood stain) on the floor in front of the TV. We looked at the door and noticed that where there should have been a glass peephole, there was a hole with cotton balls stuffed in it. Not too reassuring. On the positive side, the bathroom was very clean and oddly new, given the rest of the motel's obvious disrepair and they did have free wi-fi. All in all, I would not reccomend staying there. It is worth it to spend the extra $20 a night so you don't have to air out your suitcase when you get home.

“Low Income Housing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2009

Much of his motel located near Interstate 84 in Portland is basically inhabited by on a permanent basis by very sad folks who actually live there year-round. If it weren't for the motel they would be homeless. I'm glad they have a place to stay, but unless you're looking for a reality check for you family, it isn't the kind of place you want to stay for a vacation.

We live in Portland and stayed here for a night while our elderly house was being re-plumbed from the ground up.

The staff were friendly and the rooms were clean enough for an average road-trip type stay.

“Safe and Quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2008

Me and my boyfriend decided to stay at the Banfield after searching for reasonable hotels online. The room was about average size, nice big bed, tv, microwave, fridge and very friendly and helpful staff. It was walking distance to the MAX, shops, starbucks, pool hall, sushi, and a trader joes. Once you walk like 5 min to the MAX, it's only like a 10 min. ride to downtown.

Overall we were pleased, and would def. stay there again.
