very friendly staff, very well-priced room ($111 for a queen bed), and central to a bunch of places downtown.
I highly recommend it and would stay again.
I opted for a “staycation” in Portland over Memorial Day weekend as I had friends visiting who also stayed at The Benson. Found a great rate on Expedia. Note that I have stayed at most of the downtown Portland hotels, however, this was my first visit to The Benson.
The Benson has hosted every American President back to Warren Harding. The hotel has old world charm (lots of wood, tapestry chairs, cozy library-like nooks). Everyone from the valet parking attendant, to the front desk, bartenders, wait staff was EXCEPTIONALLY polite. Check-in was efficient. My room was charming – king size bed with a sofa, 42” flat screen with MULTIPLE HD channels. I found the bed very comfortable – had no trouble sleeping.
Remember the hotel has “old world charm” – the bathroom was well-appointed but TINY. Again, this is not the most modern hotel, but it has a charming ambience, courteous staff, extensive restaurant/room service menu (London Grill & El Gaucho in the building). The hotel is conveniently located (we walked EVERYWHERE) near restaurants, shopping, transportation (Portland Streetcar & Tri-Met trains), Voodoo Doughnuts, clubs, bars, Voodoo Doughnuts, late night food carts, and Voodoo Doughnuts.
Note that The Benson is in the heart of downtown Portland. If you are sensitive to the “sounds of the city,” I recommend that you bring ear plugs or find another hotel further south. However, don’t discount The Benson. It's a gorgeous historical building, and it suited my “staycation” needs just fine. Did I mention that Voodoo Doughnuts is only 3 blocks away? :)
Wonderful old hotel, a great value for the money, very centrally located with a wonderful ambience.
I recently had a business meeting at the Benson which is a beautifully restored old hotel. The facilities (including conference room) were great as was the food and catering. Rooms were standard size, but very comfortable and service/staff were all very helpful and down to earth.
