We are avid Kimpton afficionados and often call Hotel Monaco our "home away from home." We have stayed at several Kimptons and absolutely love their quality assurance, their special touches (morning coffee + hot cocoa, evening wine happy hour, "raid the mini bar,") etc. That said, when we booked a room on Christmas Eve at Hotel Vintage Plaza, we thought we'd be met with the same Kimpton quality we've grown to love and expect.
Unfortunately, we were wrong.
The biggest reason why I'm giving this hotel 3 stars is because of the room quality. They really, really, really need to invest in some type of remodel at this hotel to stay competitive. We have stayed in literally every four star hotel in Portland and the room quality is the lowest we've seen. When we first entered our room, almost every surface was covered in dust-- the telephone, the mirrors, the nightstand, the windowsill, the TV table, the lamps, etc. It was really off-putting because it looked like it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in a long time. There was also a throw pillow on our bed which was completely stained on the front with what looked like coffee/chocolate milk or some other dark brown beverage. Like it was literally covered in this substance, and then placed back on the bed. I'm not sure what the person cleaning this room was thinking...
Finally, the sheets were wrinkled with hairs on them and it made me wonder whether the room had even been sanitized after the last guest left and if the sheets were cleaned at all. Needless to say, I asked to be moved (especially since it was Christmas Eve!) and we were moved to a nice (and clean) king room two floors up. However, there was another guest's room service tray which sat out next to our room for nearly six hours, and a trundle bed was in the hallway the entire time during our stay.
Unfortunately, hotel shows a lot of wear. There were paint peels and nicks everywhere; chips and permanent stains on the nightstand by our bed, worn carpeting and curtains, and even the lobby furniture showed its wear as well. The furnishings in this hotel could really use some TLC.
However, it's very important for me to point out the positives because the staff here were truly wonderful and made it a special trip for us despite the disappointing first room. The wine sommalier during happy hour was absolutely fabulous-- so friendly and kind to everyone! We had fun downstairs meeting other Christmas guests. Another staff member sent a bottle of wine up to our room to apologize for our first room disappointment and that definitely made everything better. :) Finally, the bar staff at Pazza were phenomenal and we had a great time enjoying some incredible fire-roasted pizza for dinner. Coffee was great in the morning and we opened presents in our bathrobes.
Pros:
*Great location
*Wonderful Kimpton amenities
*Excellent staff
*Delicious restaurant
Cons:
*Quality of rooms and overall wear and tear of hotel
