For a recent conference, I decided to try a different hotel on my list of choices, and stayed at Hotel 50. The price was slightly lower than any of the other hotels on my list, and the menu at their restaurant looked good, so I gave it a shot. And boy am I glad I did!
Everything about my stay was pleasant. Valet and front desk staff were friendly and helpful, and offered me several free bottles of water, which I greatly appreciated (no $4.00 charge like other chain hotels!). The room was tastefully decorated, and while my room was a little stuffy, it was easy enough to open the window and get some fresh air every day of my (4 day) stay. The bed was comfortable, and they had a nice big flat screen on the wall. One night it punked out on me, but maintenance came up and within 10 minutes the problem was resolved.
The restaurant has an outstanding menu, and their mixologist is truly an artist, mixing up some very tasty cocktail concoctions. I generally stick with wine or beer, but one night I told him I was ready to be adventurous and asked him to mix me something to pair with my delish beef appetizer. He asked me some questions about what I liked and wound up making me the most amazing concoction with gin and egg white. The prices on their food run a little higher, but they have an excellent Happy Hour menu from 4-6:30 and again from 9:00 to close, giving plenty of time to eat well for less money.
The hotel is right on the red and blue Max line, and it was easy to get to and from my conference at the Convention Center. The location is right on the waterfront, so a nice view too. It was a little loud in my room, but once I got used to the noise, it really wasn't an issue. Plus, nothing some earplugs can't help with.
The room rate was very reasonable, and quite a bit cheaper than the hotels I usually stay in. I have to say that Hotel 50 has become my new go-to hotel when I stay in Portland, for business or for pleasure. They offer the same conveniences as chain hotels, but provide more of a boutique style charm. Highly recommended!
Room Tip: Ask for a view room, whether city or waterfront.
