The Pro's
- Very clean, great accommodations - large rooms. I stayed in a studio room with a king size bed, a desk with three chairs, couch, an easy chair, mini-frig, microwave oven, bar sink, and what looked like a 52" flat screen TV. (see my tip section)
- The staff were very friendly.
- The breakfast is one of the best FREE breakfast I've ever had at a hotel, except for maybe another Embassy Suites.
- There is also daily complimentary drinks and snacks at the end of the day, which was pretty good since there was enough time to down 3 or 4 drinks (premium alcohols cost extra).
- The pool, hot tub, sauna and workout room was decent, but the hours is a definite plus, the facility was open till midnight.
- Another big plus, it's one block from the original Voodoo doughnut shop!
The Con's:
- It is an old building ... although some will find a certain charm to it.
- Most of the views from the rooms face the windows of rooms in the next wing of the building ... which is not a great loss since the only view worth seeing in Portland would be the river and Mount Hood and there is a very limited number of rooms that have this vantage point.
- The location of this hotel can be considered both good and bad ... it borders one end of the city core, and is within walking distance to the activities, stores and restaurants. Unfortunately, it is also at the beginning of the not so nice part of town (Chinatown/The Old Town). During my stay, two nights in a roll there were police activity (assaults in the parking garage) across the street. BTW, the transit system is second to none here in Portland.
Bottom-line, I'd gladly stay here again ... and I'd even make a special trip to Portland if I can get the same deal I got last weekend.
Room Tip: Steer away from the rooms next to elevators (335, 435, 535, etc.) While the noise is not real loud...
