“Great spot in Downtown Portland.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We stayed 6 nights at the Modera last September and were really impressed.

The location of the hotel in the heart of the Downtown office district means that there isn't much of interest in the immediate vicinity but a short walk takes you into the heart of the city and towards more interesting neighbourhoods. The hotel is really well connected to public transport along 5th and 6th avenues making it simple to get around town. The hotel is also in the free travel zone which saved us some $.

Our room was spacious and decorated in a chic, modern style. The king size bed was incredibly comfortable and the quiet location made for a good nights sleep. The bathroom was more than adequate as well and included a deep tub and a power shower. The decor of the hotel generally was really nice and ultra modern - the lobby had funky furniture and artwork as well as iPads for staying in touch online.

The amenities at the hotel were above par too. The onsite Nel Centro bar and restaurant cater for all meals (Sunday brunch was good) and was a great spot for a night cap. They have live jazz on weekends which was a cool touch. We really liked the outdoor deck with fire pits and luckily we also had the weather to enjoy it. We made use of the gym and swimming pool around the corner at the 24 hour fitness health club which is free for guests and a nice perk. WI-FI is free throughout.

Staff were friendly and helpful not to mention invariably young and hip. I've knocked a star off the review though for one issue we had that wasn't satisfactorily resolved whereby our safe stuck in the locked position and had to be drilled midway through our stay. We were surprised that the safe wasn't immediately replaced or a room swap offered. Given the hotels limited liability for loss of valuables this was a problem for us. Of course we were unlucky that this happened and it was the only spoiler on an otherwise perfect stay.

Our bill was paid for by an employer as our trip was partially work based so we can't comment on prices or value for money but in every other regard we wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Modera. We usually prefer Air B&B and staying with locals but we very much enjoyed our visit.

Dear Recent Guest,

Thank you for choosing Hotel Modera on your recent trip to Portland! I am happy that you found our location convenient, our beds comfortable, our amenities luxurious and our décor stylish. I am also very pleased to hear that our front desk staff was friendly, hip, and accommodating. We truly believe we have a great team!

I do regret that you experienced an issue with your complimentary in room safe, and I apologize that we did not offer a room-move. We are currently limited on replacement safes and parts, but we should have made a better effort to ensure you felt that your personal belongings were secure.

Thanks again for staying with us and thank you very much for the great review! We look forward to having you with us on your next trip to Portland!

“Awesome!”

We only stayed one night at Modera before flying out of Portland, and I wish we had more nights. It's a lovely hotel, very modern in a really smart way with all original artwork, it felt very warm and welcoming. My ONLY complaint would be that the room was a little small, but that's ok, the bed was great, so was the bathroom! A great value. We got a deal which included free valet parking which was nice, most hotels in downtown Portland charge a valet fee. There is a restaurant and a great outdoor patio on the ground floor, which was really hopping, even on a Wednesday night! Good location, highly recommend.

“Fantastic Everything”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I rarely write reviews, but my husband and I stayed at Hotel Modera and had an incredible experience. We saw a show at the Eileen Schnitzer Theatre, a 3-block walk from the hotel. We've never received better service from a hotel staff. They were very helpful with recommendations, directions, and we never wanted for anything. The front desk gave us a great recommendation for a walk to the rose garden and even remembered us when we came back several hours later. The room was nice, well-decorated, spacious, quiet and very clean. The location couldn't have been more convenient and we walked a lot during our stay. We loved the new state-of-the-art 24 Hour Fitness that the hotel partners with and appreciated that very much as well as the great bar for a drink after a long day of activity. We will definitely stay here again.

“Thin Walls!! too bad...”

I stayed here in the winter of 2011. First I want to say that this is the first review I have ever written. I liked the general hip and modern feel of the Hotel and it was clean. I will never return to this hotel, however, because of the noise! There was a review that talked about the thinness of the walls, but I unfortunately, went any way hoping for the best especially after reading so many positive reviews. Maybe if you don't have to get up in the morning... No, even then I will never return. I don't want to have all my neighbors sounds in my room all night long! And I don't want to have to move to another room- with equally thin walls- too many good choices in Portland.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for choosing Hotel Modera on your trip to Portland last February. We are thankful that all of the good reviews here on TripAdvisor persuaded you to reserve with us and that you found our hotel hip and modern, but am deeply disappointed that during your stay you encountered an issue with noise transference in your guestroom. Most of the complaints we get about noise transference are due to the guestroom being one that adjoins with another, and I assume this was likely the cause of your noise issues as well. When this hotel was built in 1962, it was constructed with masonry concrete block walls which helps soundproof a room from noise disturbance. However, we also understand that guests may experience additional noise they are not accustomed to at home, and for those who are more sensitive to noise will especially experience noise issues in rooms with adjoining doors.

In response to the few complaints we have about noise transference between rooms with adjoining doors, we have budgeted and plan to seal and insulate most of the adjoining rooms we currently have this year. We hope that by doing this we will nearly eliminate any future noise transference issues and complaints.

I am very sorry that you were dissatisfied by your stay last year, and hope in the future you might bring to our attention any issues to the front desk so that we will have an opportunity to solve any problem you may have. I would like to encourage you to contact me directly to discuss the details of your stay.

Regards,
Desmond Mollendor

“A very pleasant modern hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Everything about the Modera is first rate. We stayed on a Living Social package for just over a hundred bucks that included valet parking and a bottle of wine. We also had free access to a nearby spa and exercise facility, but did not take advantage of that. Maybe next time. We had dropped off our daughter at the airport at 5:30 am, stopped for some breakfast, then came to the hotel around 9 am to park our car. We were ecstatic that they actually let us check in that early. Since we had little sleep the previous night, we took a nap and woke up refreshed a couple of hours later. The room was modern and clean, the bathroom modern and well appointed, and the King bed was very comfortable. I also appreciate the free wireless internet access.

All the staff were friendly, from the bell staff and valet, to the front desk, to housekeeping. We spent the day in Portland, then took in a Broadway show at the Keller Auditorium two blocks away. What a pleasure in the dark winter to walk back to the hotel and not have to drive an hour home in the dark. We did take the opportunity to walk around the public areas, which were all inviting. Outside in the garden were raised fire pits. It was quite comfortable, even on a chilly night, to sit by the fire.

The next morning as we checked out, the staff offered to put our bags in the car while we finished our weekend retreat in downtown Portland. When we returned, our car had been brought near the entrance and was ready for us.

We did not dine at the hotel this trip, but I look forward to trying it. We will be back. The Italian menu looks interesting.

We definitely recommend this hotel. The only minor complaint I have is that the free wine was cheap California swill. In the middle of Oregon wine country, I would expect a little better. But we had enough to drink elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view. It is $10 more and worth it.
