I just got back from a great trip bicycling Portland. I stayed at the Residence Inn near Lloyd Center, which is the perfect hotel for visiting Portland by bike. I spent the entire week getting around by bike, foot, and public transportation and never missed having a car. The hotel is just three blocks from a TriMet Max Light Rail Station, which provides direct connection to the airport, downtown, and many of the outlying areas. Because it is the last station in the "free transit zone," trips into downtown Portland cost nothing on the Max, which was a great money saver. Also, the street fronting the hotel has a bike lane, which provides easy access to the excellent Eastbank Esplanade bike trail which can take you downtown or to miles of other trails.
The hotel is directly across from the Lloyd Center Mall, a multiplex theater, and a short distance from several great walking neighborhoods, including the Alberta Arts district, which features a wide variety of shops and restaurants.
The hotel itself is more like an apartment, than a hotel. My studio room had a queen bed, foldout couch, desk, breakfast nook, fireplace, free Wi-Fi, and a small kitchen. My room was on the ground floor, which allowed me to just roll my bike into the room. The spacious room left plenty of room to store a bike, without having it get in the way.
The grounds of the hotel are quite pretty - filled with trees, which were in full autumn splendor during my trip. On the hotel grounds are a pool, hot tub, and large coin operated laundry room, which came in very handy.
For a hungry cyclist, the free breakfast buffet was particularly welcome. Regular items included a Crockpot full of oatmeal, cereals, yogurt, fruit, muffins, toast, and make your own waffles, and then each morning featured a different "main course" like breakfast burritos and sausage egg biscuits.
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, the hotel also offers a free light dinner.
Portland is one of the most bike friendly cities I have ever experienced and for the two wheel traveler, the Residence Inn at the Lloyd Center is a great base for exploring the Rose city.
