“Romance for Literary Fans”

The Sylvia Beach Hotel is one of my favorite places on this planet. It is always inspiring and relaxing and is a lovely retreat when one is alone or with a partner. The journals in the cleverly decorated rooms, based on famous authors, attest to the diverse tales of the visitors to this wind-swept jewel.

While the rooms and beds are comfortable and pretty, they can be occasionally noisy, given the thin walls. My least favorite room to stay in is the women's dorm. Dang, can they snore loudly!!! One time, half of us ended up sleeping on the couches in the lounges. Quite ridiculous.

I don't always join in the dinner festivities, as there are other good restaurants in the area too, but the meals are always tasty, reasonably-priced for the quality and quantity, and invariably lively with intelligent, creative guests. Breakfast is also always a big treat.

The fire, the puzzles, the books, the wind, the beach, the mulled wine and tea, and the usually gentle and respectful style of the guests makes this a special treat any time I can get to Newport.

Room Tip: It really depends on your budget and literary interests. The Novels are really a good deal because...

“Literary getaway!”

We stayed in the Tennessee Williams room, and it was a delight...watching my partner gazing at the sunset as the ocean breeze toyed the curtains in the windows and bed certainly made for lovely romance. Hanging out in the library and reading, interacting occasionally with other guests, and watching fireworks all contributed to a lovely stay.

In addition, having not read much Tennessee Williams, now I have and am hooked...!

Room Tip: Most of the rooms have something unique about them, and if you didn't already know the author, p...

I stay at the Sylvia Beach Hotel twice a year after teacher conferences. I have always enjoyed my stay, even during that shabby period that some reviewers have mentioned. For my last visit in October 2011 I stayed in the new JK Rowling room. Delightful! Everything seems a bit more spiffy of late, and I want to encourage folks who may have not been in awhile to check back. It is especially therapeutic for solo reflection and relaxation. I believe it is one of the most healing nearby places for me.

Room Tip: North side have ocean view. The more expensive rooms are great for couples - and you can use the fir...

“A simply wonderful, peaceful place to relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

After reading some of the reviews on this website, I admit I was a little nervous about my first stay at Sylvia Beach Hotel. What I've come to realize, after my stay this past weekend, is that some people equate old with dirty. That's fine, but if you fall into that category, go stay at the Shilo Inn and save this little gem for the rest of us who enjoy a more unique experience.

I stayed two nights in the Lincoln Steffens room with a wonderful north-facing view of the beach. The room was small but nicely and uniquely furnished with antiques, making for a cozy space to read and relax. I was especially pleased with the wonderful, quiet library on the third floor where I spend hours reading and writing in my journal, where they served delicious spiced wine in the late evening.

The breakfasts are amazing. Lots of choice, and good, strong coffee. I didn't have dinner at the Table of Contents, but I will next time.

Yes, this is a hotel that attracts eccentric, interesting, reader/writer types. It's not the place to come with your former college roommates to party on the beach. But it's definitely the place to find some quiet, peaceful time for yourself to think, reflect, or meditate. I don't think I need to stay anywhere else on the Oregon Coast.

“Great Place to Watch Storms”

The hotel is old and homey. Rooms are named after writers and decorated to fit their genres. The neighborhood was friendly and we ate at a little cafe that I can't remember the name of.

Room Tip: Pick your favorite author! The Edgar Allen Poe room is very popular.
