Because we were traveling with kids, we weren't looking for frills. Just clean and comfortable please. Unfortunately, this did not live up to our hopes.

The Good: The location is close to beautiful Oregon wine country. The internet worked just fine and was easy to access. Most of the staff were courteous (except the woman who scowled at us for asking if they would please put out more coffee during the breakfast). The kitchenette area had lots of counterspace and was very useful and spacious. The room itself was fairly spacious. Matresses were fairly comfortable. The hotel is tucked back away from the street, so we didn't hear any road noise.

The Bad: While we didn't have any specifically noisy guests, the walls are very, very thin. We had to knock on the adjoining door to our room to kindly get the person to turn off their cell phone alarm after it had been ringing for five minutes straight. Had there been any insulation/sound proofing, that wouldn't have been an issue. Within the room, the air conditioner/heater is loud. The breakfast was, well...lacking. We've had a great many hotel "continental" breakfasts, and this was the least desirable. The "remodel" the hotel touts is updated bed coverings (which were decent), cheaply painted doors to make them look like dark wood (already chipping), and a couple of feet of tile on the bathroom floor.

AND...The Ugly: First and foremost was the mold all over in the shower, the "barely" clean toilet, and soiled carpets. I just can't tolerate that. I cringed at everything my family touched - sheets, mugs, glasses - wondering if the same negligence was applied to their cleaning. I can't imagine sitting in a hot tub or swimming in the pool. :p And when we went out to our car in the back parking lot, there were a couple of drunks who were walking from the low end apartments the are directly behind the hotel, being loud and making lewd comments to my daughter and I. I was relieved that we had a strong male present!

The friendly staff made me WANT to rate this hotel more highly, but there were just too many negatives to do so. Sorry, but I cannot recommend this one.

“A nice hotel and close to wine country”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2010

Most people pick Newberg because of its closeness to wine country and we were no exception. Shilo Inn was very nice. The front desk staff were the friendliest that I had ever seen. Our king bed mini suite was a very good value and had lots of room to move around. We had no problems with hot water or pressure or the T.V. as I have read in other reviews. The free wi-fi worked great. The bed was very comfortable. My only complaints would be that this hotel has some remnants from the past like a musty odor and thin walls that I remember from hotels from the 70's.

“I WOULD GO BACK AGAIN!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

My girlfriend and I went there the first week of Sept. We were there to check out the wine country. The front desk staff was very curtious and gave us a lot of brochures on the different winery's around the area. I thought the entire staff was very friendly. Head house keeper helped us out and gave us a ride to go pick up our rental car. The front Desk girl day shift had all of these maps of the surrounding area's and things to do, which made it very easy to find our way around. I felt that the staff went above and beyound making us feel welcomed.

I would recommend this to any one who is looking for a 2-3 day get away. I am already am planning my trip back and this time I am bringing my parents in January.

“Careful with your belongings”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

We had a problem with a lost swimsuit bottom. The swimsuit was set on a towel to dry. When we came back that afternoon the towel and swimsuit bottom were gone. I asked about it both that evening and the following morning. At first the bottom was located and then disappeared. They think it was thrown away by housekeeping. A bit suspect.

“very friendly staff, cute little place in oregon's wineland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2010

Great little hotel for being a mid-economy brand. I thought the breakfast was plentiful, the entire staff was friendly and happy, and when walking in: you just felt like you were at home. We came on a wine getaway with some friends to the nearby hills. The birds were chirping outside, it just felt like I could get away from the rush of seattle and portland, even though it was only a short drive from both cities. The rooms were very clean, beds comfortable, quiet hotel, and just cozy in general. I would consider coming here again definitely.
