The Siletz Bay Lodge is under new ownership. Not as cozy.
UNBELIEVABLE PROBLEMS:
We (extended family) encountered serious levels of beach fire smoke in our Siletz Bay Lodge, OR rooms on the 4th floor on August 19th, 20th, 21st (2010). Yes, there is some smoke every time we stay, but a reasonable amount is always expected at the beach. We like a fire. Upon our arrival a foreign guest checking out told the desk staff about a serious smoke problem. I did not listen to understand. It entered closed room windows and deck doors, and contaminated ALL belongings. The lodge said they would resolve any smoke problems if we told them, but they did/could not. Other guests on our floor told us of their bad room smoke. They were fearful to complain, so I did. BIG MISTAKE! I had to dial 911 on the lodge office phone for a fire department representative smoke assessment – against strong lodge staff wishes. The (911) fire guy was cancelled when the (911) police had to respond (below). In the lobby I had discussed the smoke problem with some guests from the beach fire. I was then called an IDIOT and said I will regret calling 911 (fire). He challenged me to touch him, which I refused – he really thought I am an idiot. After quick de-escalation I had to order the very reluctant senior staff member, who just arrived after-the-fact, to phone 911 because I was threatened and concerned for my safety. Days later I discovered that the senior staff member told police she voluntarily called 911 complaining I and the other guest caused an escalating problem. She had told my son-in-law this fact. It’s no wonder the police did not desire to talk to me. They talked to every one else. The only people present during the threatening incident were the young female desk clerk, the confrontational couple with a child, and me. I forced a brief explanation to the two departing officers, who showed no interest. I still wonder if the police officers knew people around the fire? I was told the anyone can have a fire anywhere on the beach they wish, even next to our building, and to keep my windows closed if I don’t like it. They cut me off and said this is Oregon when I tried to explain a personal incident in Washington State where I voluntarily put out my fire. I guess I was expecting too much to expect common courtesy, respect, ethics, cooperation, support, understanding, and police professionalism. Too bad, we really did like this lodging and area. We all cancelled late on the 21st , and initially had to argue to void room charges for that night. The senior staff member finally relented. Two empty rooms Saturday night. My son checked out a day earlier.
THERE WAS NO INVESTIGATION OF ROOM SMOKE BY LODGE STAFF OR POLICE. THE POLICE NEVER TALKED TO ME ABOUT THE PERSONAL THREAT. NO FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL ARRIVE. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE, ANYONE?
Signed: The idiot from Washington
