“Fantastic view, friendly staff, comfortable room”

Despite its unassuming look from the road, the vagabonds treasure lies behind the motel rooms on the cliff above the Columbia. We were in a room on the second floor with a stupendous view of the river and cliffs. We watche boats and birds and just relaxed. The front desk staff were very friendly and told us the story of the owner seeing hood river in a magazine and moving here to build this family owned hotel. Just our style, great value, locally owned and clean.

Thanks and glad you enjoyed your stay. Yep, my grandparents moved to Hood River from Montana after seeing the cover of the Sacramento Post from April 1951, a copy we have hanging in the office. 3 years later of that publication, almost to the day, they opened the doors of our little hotel. We'll do a bit more work on creating nice spaces to watch the birds and river, and see if we can find where the eagles moved their nest to along the cliff. Thanks again!

“Best kept secret in Hood River”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

I debated on whether to review this place or not because it is so nice, and I don't want too many people to find out about it! Our room was on the third floor with a balcony and overlooked the river. We could see the parasailors on the river. It is very clean and doesn't smell musty. The only criticism I have would be that people smoked on their balcony below us, and it was very annoying. I don't know how that could be fixed. We stayed two days over July 4th, and it was quiet and restful other than the smokers. Ate at Three Rivers Grill, and the food was excellent.

Room Tip: Get a room on the third floor overlooking the river.

Thanks for your review! Don't worry about sharing your great experience with others; it helps us make things even better for the next time you visit. 40 of our 42 rooms are smoke-free, but should a person choose to smoke they can do so as long as it does not go against Oregon law or our guidelines (no smoking in rooms, etc). We'll be working on a project where a section of the hotel will be entirely smoke and pet-allergy free, to inlcude balconies and walkways. I'll keep you in mind while working on that. Glad you had a great stay and that we can be your secret retreat! Thanks again

“Great Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

During crazy ice storms, I got into a car accident by Hood River. I checked into this hotel and the pepole there were very nice and helpful! The room was quite spacious and very clean with a tv, microwave, and fridge. I would definitely recomment this place to everyone!

Glad we could help out during the ice storm; mother nature was not being nice those days. We've seen people on the freeway during all sorts of weather for almost 58 years and will continue to recommend that when conditions make it too much of a mess to drive, to stop somewhere safe until the storm blows over. Glad you enjoyed your stay, thanks again.

“Hidden Gem”

My fiance and I stayed here last Friday night and we loved it. I am usually the type to find the "fancier" hotels (if you will), however, I prefer quaint over heavy traffic and views of parking lots, when possible. It was easy to see from my online searches that the chain hotels were all mid city and probably not worth their price tag. Thanks to all the great reviews, we booked at Vagabond Lodge, and after seeing the other options in the city for ourselves, I know we chose the best place for our tastes. Rooms are no frills, but very clean and the pride of ownership strongly shines through. We got a double queen room with a view, and I was really bummed we couldn't spend more time in the room, or on our private balcony. The woman at the front desk was genuine and friendly, the huge shower heads are awesome, the views stunning, and the property was gorgeous! Quite possibly one of my favorite places to stay to date. Hugely recommended. Thank you to the staff of Vagabond Lodge, for giving us great value for our money, we will be back, and we are telling everyone we know. :)

P.S. We didnt enjoy our lunch at Full Sail Brewery in Hood River at all, though we do like their beers. Pay the toll to cross the river into Bingen, Washington and find Solstice Wood Fire Cafe on the main drag... they had phenomonal dessert, tasty pizza (and other amazing wood fired entrees), and the best beer I have ever had.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view so you get a balcony and are set back a bit further from the Interstate.

Glad you had a great stay and thanks for your review! We do like to offer a little more charming surroundings, and we will continue to be updating furniture and fixtures as well. We want to make sure we get stuff for the rooms that everyone will enjoy; the large showerheads for example. As always, let us know if there's anything you would like and we'll see if we can make it happen! Thanks again.

“Surprising great stay and pet friendly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

We stayed here three nights for New Year's weekend and were so happy! We upgraded to a fireplace suite and had an amazing view of the Gorge to wake up to every morning. Our dogs got to come and the place is very pet friendly, Pet waste stations everywhere and plenty of places to walk them, not to mention all the hiking, snow, and adventures surrounding the area. Conveniently located by Hood River, but still in quiet location to get away from it all. The shower head was amazing, beds comfy, and free coffee. We are coming back to this little gem in the Gorge! You would never know by driving by,but stay here, get a room with a view and bring your pup too!

Room Tip: Pick a room with a view and get a fireplace for the ambiance.

Thanks and glad we could pleasantly surprise you! We do have a low profile out front with our original building (circa 1954); many people are surprised to learn about the rooms overlooking the river, hidden from the road. We'll be continuing to make improvements to the rooms (like the showerheads) this year, working on making each stay better than the last for you and the dogs. Thanks again!
