“Delighted by it all!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2011

My Husband and I stayed for two nights and had a fantastic time. One of the best B&Bs if not THE BEST we have ever stayed at.

The place was clean and beautiful. The owners we very friendly, kind and helpful but not intrusive.

The room was so rich feeling. Double shower heads, jacuzzi, granite top, double sinks and space that gave us a feeling of a beautiful 5 Star hotel only better.

We have travel much over the years and stayed in many B&Bs including New Zealand. We both fell in love with this place and even reserved it for our daughters wedding night.

One fantastic place to stay, feel pampered, at home and yet in a wonderful get away.

We LOVED IT!

“What a magnificent experience--”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2010

I looked at previous reviews for this guest house and was amazed at the variety of responses experienced by various guests! I phoned the proprietor and spoke to one of the nicest and kindest persons imaginable. She told me that she was aware of some of the more outspoken reviews but assured me that any problems had been remedied===and she was right! Our stay was incredible===the hosts (Della & Virgil could not have been more obliging. My wife and I (both physicians) prefer high standards when vacationing and they were certainly realized at Mt. Scott .We are veteran B&B'ers and this ranks as one of the best in all categories--it is homey and sincere with amenities expected at only the more higher priced B&B's. This place is a BARGAIN and I cannot recommend it highly enough! Don't go if you expect a five star resort====this is an upscale B&B . It is as if you were visiting a friend's country estate. Della explains the lay out of the house on arrival and one has total use of the common rooms and kitchen including snacks, wine, and delicious home-made "goodies" (chocolate cake and pecan pie on our visit). We intended to stay 2 dqys and ended up staying for ten! What a wonderful and unique experience. By the way==we preferred that there not be daily maid service and she informed us that this was standard at her home but if you prefer this all one has to do is ask.

“Fraudulent Charges”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

I made this reservation on a whim, without reading any reviews, lesson learned.
I called to reserve a 1 night stay and asked about their policy on extending our visit, Della said I could extend during our stay she no other reservations.
I called Della to say I would be arriving shortly after dinner and she said that would be fine, I missed a call from her during my meal with my wife, her voicemail states that she was going out to dinner with Virgil and she would see us soon. My wife and I arrived to an empty house and sat in the driveway for 50min. We received a quick tour of the house and she pointed us to our room. Come the next morning at about 8:30am Della was nowhere to be found so I had a conversation with Virgil about the property and the wildlife in the area, and informed him that we would not be able to stay for the 9am breakfast or that night, He said ok, and my wife and I left.
I was recently charged for both nights stay even though I left and did not come back, Della did try to call me at 9:32PM, for what I do not know since she did not leave a voicemail.
I called her after I saw the charge on my statement, I told her I was overcharged and that I had spoke to Virgil to ensure there was no confusion, She tried to blame the misunderstanding on Virgil being deaf; I told her I noticed since he had to put in his hearing aid for us to have the conversation we did. After that she became very abrupt and told me she every right to charge me what she did, if I had a problem with it I would have to go through my credit card company and then she hung up.
I was going to write a somewhat decent review since this BnB has been lambasted previously and it seems like they have tried a little to improve, but nothing irks me more than dishonest business, The bed was nice the room was large and the view was peaceful. You can hear everything going on in the house which stole my sense of privacy with my wife since all the rooms are butted up next to each other.

Dear Matthew, I know you are young and do many things on impulse, but your “FRAUDULENT CHARGES” title, is calling me a thief, YOU ARE THE ONE THAT CONTRACTED FOR AND RESERVED A ROOM FOR TWO NIGHTS AND THEN SKIPPED OUT, let us look at the facts; when you first contacted me you wanted to check availability and reserve the Eagle for Friday September 17th and 18th and maybe Sunday the 19th; I told you all three days were available, and requested that you tell me at your soonest or at check-in regarding Sunday so I could make it available for others, at that time I took your name, address, and telephone number, then you stated that you needed to check with your wife before fully confirming, and I said that would be fine.

You then called me back two or three hours later, you stated you did not want Friday the 17th, but you did request and reserve both Saturday and Sunday, you then provided your credit card information. Both times you contacted me it was to reserve TWO nights.

You had several opportunities the day of your arrival to cancel Sunday, and I would have accepted said cancellation, during your 15 minute orientation, when you came down and asked for the Iron and Ironing board, when you helped yourself to two designer beers, when you came down for peach cobbler and ice cream, when you got two soft drinks, and bottled waters.

You have also complained we were not home when you arrived, my response is, I do not want your running list of ESCAPADES the only reason I ask for a call prior to arrival is to get your ETA, so I can make personal plans; your first call of “four”, I received around 1:00 p.m. stating you were in Troutdale, which is less that 20 minutes from my home, then two hours later you called stating you and your wife were shopping, THEN you called around 5:00pm stating you and your wife were going to have dinner before checking in you stated it would take around two hours, your last call on my caller ID was made at 6:05 pm. Five minutes before I arrived home from having my first meal out in over four weeks.

“This is a private home, not a proper B&B! Their website is misleading”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2010

Don't expect a key to your room because there isn't one. The front door is never locked so people can come in off the street. We were worried about our belongings because the bedroom door only locked from the inside. The place does not have any signs out the front to indicate that it is a B&B. The owners have a chicken coop with dozens of mite infested hens, 6 cats and a baby rabbit which was living in the downstairs bathroom. I wanted to freshen up on my arrival and since our room was not ready, asked if there was somewhere else I could go. Della offered me the kitchen sink, which I declined. Breakfast is taken at their kitchen table - otherwise known as their "dining room". I had to go looking for bowls and glasses myself. She made me some poached eggs and picked the cooked eggs up in her hand and plopped them onto my plate. Same with the toast! We were horrified. No utensils were used. There was no real effort made and this may explain why they do not have many guests. The room was lovely but the bed was as soft as a marshmallow and my husband and I ended up in the middle of the bed due to the mattress being way too soft. Their website makes the place look professional and resort-like, which it is not. One day I returned to see Virgil, the 81 year old owner, sitting at the, ahem, "dining" table, his shirt completely undone to the waist exposing his bare chest. This place just rents out spare bedrooms and calls itself a B&B. Go elsewhere is my recommendation. By the way, we stayed 3 nights and our room was never serviced.

Dear Future Guests, this booking was made and paid for by a business associate or agent, the premises were opened for him to fully inspect the common rooms and the Master prior to their arrival, but perhaps Blondie should have stated her preference for 5 star, $500.00 plus per night Michelin rated resort hotels like the ones she raves about in previous postings on this site

Dear Blondie,

Thank you for your review, especially your star rating, where you marked all things except service and sleep quality as being well above average, and cleanliness as exceptional.

As for your title that states that my website is misleading, both my bedandbreakfast and my personal websites state this is a private home, in an upscale suburban residential area, with four large comfortable rooms with private baths to choose from. There are no “spare rooms”, there is four bedroom suites upstairs fully dedicated to my new bed and breakfast business, there is absolutely no posturing or statements that this is a “resort” because it is not. And most Guests upon arrival state that the pictures do not capture how spacious and truly beautiful it is.

As you state you were here for three nights, you made no mention of discomfort regarding your bed, desiring maid service, nor fear for your safety, and you ate all three breakfasts provided, Dear Guest unless I am told of a problem, I cannot fix it.

Also you state you were here for three nights with no servicing of your suite, both of my websites fully states I do not service rooms unless requested to do so, most of my Guests prefer this, At all times I respect the privacy of my Guests. But if you had requested at any time it would have been provided.

Now to address your issue of the safety, During the day time my front door is always unlocked, but security is in place, after my last Guests arrive back and are situated for the evening, I dead-bolt all ground floor entrances and turn off the flood lights. As for your statement “anyone could walk in off the street” that is ridiculous, number one, we are on a dead-end cul de sac, with no foot traffic, and also how do you think I was able to greet you each evening upon your return, to request what you would prefer for breakfast and ask if you had any special requests? I do not have ESP as some Guests have stated, and I assure you I do not stand around all night waiting around the staircase for your arrival. Also I hope you remembered to say “cheese” upon entering the stair case landing. Please let me assure all past and future Guests We have an extensive and very expensive state of the art Security system hard wired throughout the entire premises and property, including the garage doors.

And no, I have no Business signs, as stated this is an upscale neighborhood, All business and Guests are prearranged and invited, we do not accept “off the street business” which signs are meant to pull in.

Regarding your arrival, you arrived over four hours before your arranged check in time, my Guests from the night before had only left 10 or 15 minutes before your arrival. If I had of had a clean and properly sanitized restroom available, I would have offered it to you, also I did not offer you my kitchen sink, I stated that the only sink that was sanitary was my kitchen sink. Also when you arrived four hours early you caught my Husband taking liquid refreshment in the breakfast nook, it was a very hot day and he had been mowing the lawn for over two hours, I unbuttoned his shirt to prevent possible heat stroke, which was around the same time one of my working cats brought me a young wild rabbit, she never harms or kills them, I always secure them in a quiet room where they can’t be harmed until I can safely return them to the wild.

Also my cats are not allowed into the guest areas, why you mention them I don’t know.
Also I was the one who told you the fresh eggs I advertised were no longer available, and I was in the process of finding new homes for my girls because of a problem of mite infestation of their hutch, at the time you were here I only had ten left, and each of them had already been sold for $20.00 each and were only awaiting pickup by their new owner.

Now onto your being horrified at breakfast service, first I want to state prior to handling or preparing any food be it for Guests or my family’s consumption, my hair is fully pulled back and secured, then my hands are washed, scrubbed, and sanitized; during breakfast service after touching bacon or any meat product, after breaking eggs, my hands are thoroughly washed and sanitized before touching anything, on average that is around five to six times per breakfast service.

For your first breakfast you requested poached eggs, toast, and your husband also wanted bacon. The bread for your toast I prepared the day before, it was hand kneaded by my bare hands that had been washed, it was punched down and rolled into it’s loaf with my bare hands, and it was sliced by my bare hands, and it is a short pivoted step from the toaster to your plate.

After years of trying differing methods of dealing with poached eggs, I opt to do it as seen on the Martha Stewart show, Cooking like a restaurant chef, Ina Gartein and Bobby Flay, and as demonstrated in the Joy of Cooking books. They are perfect and unbroken when they are placed on your plate, and they are not wallowing in an excess water.

“Good experience but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2009

Della and Virgil were wonderful hosts. She made an amazing breakfast with fresh eggs from her chicken coup and warm maple syrup for the pancakes and wafles. The mattress was better than ours at home - it was quite confortable. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience that I would say was good however not great. Next time we will remember to ask if this is a non-smoking B&B. What I mean is that the sheets, towels and carpet had the smell of cigarette smoke. As mentioned in a separate post, our room was quite warm however we couldn't open the windows because there were not any screens and the bugs would come in. We were a little disappointed that we could not watch "live" regular cable in our room but had to revert to previously taped shows via OnDemand. Finally, it was quite distracting hearing other guests in the room next to us. It seemed like the walls were paper thin. Unlike previous posts, we could not hear the chicken coup from our room however we did not stay in the Oriental suite. Despite these things, it was still a good experience.
