“Lovely Oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

This quaint hotel is located at the edge of a town with a population hovering at 14 or so people. It has a an enclosed porch and small park next door where one can sit watch the sun go down over a lovely panorama. The rooms are adequate. The food is earthy and delicious, served family style. It is almost impossible not to have a conversation with other guests as you dine. The proprietors are efficient and helpful. Set amidst the vast panoramas of SE Oregon, this place is truly a welcomed oasis not to be missed. Should you run low on fuel, you can even get (overpriced) gas at the nearby General Store. Go for it!

“Been there twice since early 1980s”

We went to Frenchglen from Paisley area and stayed the night, communal dinner was superb (prime rib), walked down the road on a dark night and the stars in the sky were like diamonds you could reach out and touch. Second time was down from Portland with enjoyable time seeing Steens Mountain (not Mountains) and the spectacular scenery, also the beautiful rivers in the area.

“An historic, pleasant oasis in the beautiful Steens/Malheur area.”

We came here for a few days during spring break and had a wonderful visit. The location is convenient for exploring the Malheur preserve, as well as the Steens. The scenery is breathtaking and oh, so peaceful. We took a day trip to the Alvord Desert and it was well worth it -- even with a little bit of snow. We stayed in the Drover's Inn cabins behind the main hotel and our room was clean and comfortable. We really enjoyed chatting with other guests around the dinner table. John, the owner, is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife. The food was great and there was plenty of it. We will definitely come back again!

“Absolutely Wonderful”

The previous reviews say it all: great location, great scenery and simple. If you're expecting the amenities of modern hotels stay in Burns. Breakfast and dinner are served family style and excellent. Most of the serving dishes are still half full at the end of dinner, which seems a little wasteful. An ideal place to stay for exploring the Steens mountains.

“Charming and Simplistic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2009

We drove way out of our way to see the Steens Mtns & Refuge Park and to stay in this hotel. It was well worth it. The scenery is nothing short of glorious and we saw lots of wildlife. Some of the roads in the area are dicey and it feels very isolated. We did get Verizon cell coverage but if leaving civilization scares you this is not your trip. The hotel had oldtime charm, no TV's, shared bath, no A/C. It was very hot in August. We had dinner here as there were really no other choices. It is served at 6:30, family style at large banquet tables, the food was good with excellent conversations amongst the guests. Our room was small and tidy, just right for a one night sleepover. It was a great experience.
