“Great place to drink or visit if you're near by. But not worth a special trip.”
So I've been to this property several times years back for happy hour, sit by the fire, etc. But this is my first review of the Grand lodge. It was my girlfriends birthday and we had planned a trip to McMenamins Edgfield (East of Portland but found out last minute that our plans had to change and so we stayed at the alternative Grand Lodge (West of Portland). The girls at the front desk that evening were nice and friendly. I booked the large room with the bathroom inside as this is a real old building and most rooms don't have that luxury. Upon seeing the room I was somewhat disappointed. sure it had all the elements of a bathroom but they were tucked behind tiny cubbies and hidden by curtains. Not very privet. For those of you unfamiliar with McMenamins they are well known for their corky and creative restoration of historic properties. The room seemed clean but I would get occasional odors of age and use. Sometimes food smells. So to say it was a lil funky even thought it felt clean.
Once we checked in we went to grab a bite at the restaurant which is mostly pub fare. The hostess sat us at a dirty table so I was a bit upset about that but didn't want to bring any more negativity after my complaints about the room. Our server was a good guy and pretty on the spot with his service. Food was good and priced well. With our rooms came free movie passes in the theater upstairs which was nice. My girlfriend and I later went out to the bar at the front of the property which I feel is the best thing about the grand lodge. (This USED to be cigar friendly but no longer, again I was disappointed) Cozy, romantic, fun, chill, patio is wonderful, etc. we had some drinks inside by the fireplace before joining many friendly strangers by the fire pit outside for more drinks and cigars.
We turned in for the night and had trouble sleeping due to a lot of noise from patrons and staff cleaning a banquet room. This happened around after 11 and I was again disappointed.
Before checkout we decided to go for a dip in the soaking pool. Walking in my rob I went to talk to the young lady at the front desk who was just rude and uninterested in me or my needs. My girl and I few moment later walked past the same young lady in our robes on the way to the soaking pool only to get locked out of the hotel and find out on our own that the pool was not to open for another hour. We made our way to a side entrance and back to our rooms before another attempt once they opened.
All in all I was disappointed with my stay here. I would only recommend this place if you were looking for a place to drink and maybe grab a snack. The cost for my room at the Grand Lodge this Saturday night would have got me a room at The Benson, The Paramount, or even the Vintage Plaza downtown. So as far as value goes.........not so good. I cant see myself ever staying here again and would NOT recommend it to anyone.
Room Tip: Stay someplace else.
