I have stayed at this property many times over the past 30 years. My grandfather owned one of their 3 bedroom condos, so I have quite a few memories that are wonderful ones from this property. I had not been back in about four years, so my husband and I decided to get away for the evening. The front desk staff was nice, but I was a bit taken aback that my 1st floor room was going to cost me $5 extra per night, just so I could walk off the patio to the beach. That was new, and rather felt like a checked bag fee. Really Driftwood Shores, is that room really worth $5 extra per night? I paid it, as I suspect most people do. I just think it is tacky.
The room was extremely run down. The carpet was dirty (leave those socks on!), and all of the furniture was really worn and dirty looking. The worst part is that the room was 50 degrees, and did not reach 65 for an hour and a half after we got there. Freezing! The bed was very old, squeeked with every movement, and had large divots worn into each side. The wireless was terrible, tossing me off the network every 10 minutes or so.
The pool renovation is a nice one, but I think I would have spent more on updating the rooms. Even the doors are worn and really make this property look run down.
If this was less expensive, I would have probably given it a higher rating, because I can handle anything if it is under $100 per night. But this small, dirty, cold room with a queen bed from hell was over $100 per night, and really was not worth it. Yes, it is the only ocean front lodging in Florence. But, next time, I will drive the extra 1/2 hour north to Yachats and stay in a nicer hotel. Sad. I hope they upgrade it.
