“No Longer a Motel, Now apartments”

After having reservations and enjoying my 2007 stay I arrived in 2008 to find Kay was fired, and the person running the place had no record of my reservations, and had no clue, my reasonable rate went crazy since they knew I was dropped off by the portland to coast shuttle. all that was neat about the place dissapeared, no more continential breakfast, and I could never get an answer as to who owned the place to complain to, except some jerk running around in a marine cap( apparently thinking he was in control.

“Whales Inn disapointing”

Newer owners are very friendly and helpful. Units are very old and in the 2 bedroom we had, you had to go through the 2nd bedroom to get to the bath room. It only had a claw foot bath tub, no shower, but I could live with that. We came back to our room in the afternoon of our 2nd night stay to find there had been a water pipe broken in our room and they were in the midst of repairing it. The repairs took several hours so we had people running in and out all the time. The carpet was TOTALLY soaked and even though it was wet vaced up, stayed soaked and was still TOTALLY soaked when we left the next day. We were very understanding of the problem they had with the plumbing and it would have been very nice of them to have made so sort of an offer to compensate us for the time we were unable to use our room and for having to walk on a soaked carpet. At $120.00 a night I really did expect more than the accomodations we could have gotten in any third world country.

“Funky, friendly, and fair!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2008

We enjoy funky, independently owned motels, and would rather spend money and time with local characters rather than with a large chain. This motel is like going back in time with a charm of the 1930's. The proprietor, Kay, is enthusiastic and friendly. The rooms are "cute" and very clean. The Queen mattress in our room was incredibly comfortable... an almost new pillow-top. We slept well in spite of being near the highway and didn't really notice much road noise.

If you simply want a good place to stay why pay for for WiFi, pools, sauna's, etc. You are within walking distance of several eateries which means you don't risk driving after a couple of toddies. This puts you right at the harbor, bridge, and whale watching building.

The room was equipped with the latest TV's, Dish Network, and DVD player. Free movies in the office can be borrowed which we did because there were no movie channels on the Dish. There is no phone in the room but we used Kay's cell phone to make a quick call... free long distance.

The room had two small dressers, a small refrigerator,a microwave, and walk-in closet. Free continental breakfast is provided. As mentioned in a previous review, the old gas wall heaters are noisy but we only ran ours to knock the initial chill off the room.

Total cost including tax was $63 with a 20% discount for a weekday.

  • Liked — Clean and very comfortable bed. Funky atmosphere and nice owners.
  • Disliked — Noisy heater and small bathroom.

“Pretty good for inexpensive lodging on the Oregon Coast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2008

Stayed one night in late December in the regular room. I think with tax it was about $65. Room was large, although bathroom was tiny and the hot and cold water taps in the shower were reversed. Clean room, big HD TV with satellite, DVD player (and even a movie) left in the room for you (no charge). Bed was comfortable, felt pretty new. The rooms are all in "themes," ours was patriotic.

Downsides: really loud heating vent, and very close to the highway. The highway isn't a problem at night, but it does make sleeping in difficult. This was expected for the price point of course.

All in all, not too bad, and I don't have any real complaints, except the tiny bathroom.

RE the pictures... She gave us a room with additional bunk beds for the same price as the regular. There was also a queen or king which is of course what we slept in.
