This is a decent hotel that I found to be highly overrated based on the reviews I had heard prior to my arrival. One person kept telling me about the glass elevators; if you have never been to a hotel with a glass elevator the views the atrium you may be impressed but otherwise it is not that impressive. There were some aspects that were good, average, and poor, but nothing that wowed me. There are far better values in the area. If you want a full evaluation continue reading.
The Good:
- The property has a nice presence when you walk in. The lobby opens up in front of you and is inviting. They have multiple desk "pods" to the left of the entrance rather than a traditional check-in counter; this creates less of a barrier between the staff and guest which is a nice touch, but the stations look more like high top bar tables than a check-in so if there is not an employee directly behind the pod (like when I arrived) it makes it a little confusing on what it actually is.
- The room had enough room and did not feel cramped.
- Having a convention center onsite was convenient and easily accessible through a curved corridor.
- The spaces at the convention center were spacious and customizable to meet the needs for our meetings.
- Although I did not use them due to meeting schedules I did check the pool and fitness areas shortly after my arrival and they appeared to be updated and adequately supplied.
- Free WiFi service in the lobby.
- It is in a good location with multiple restaurants, some shopping, and a movie theater close by.
The Average:
- The rooms were nicely appointed but nothing special.
- Employees were friendly but did not do anything above and beyond to make the visit more enjoyable.
The Bad:
- The room was on the side next to the interstate and the walls and windows did not do much in the way of sound dampening so I was able to hear the traffic. If you are going to stay here I would strongly suggest that you request being away from the interstate side. I was on the 6th of 9 floors and that did not help at all with the sound problem.
- The bathroom was poorly cleaned and there were long hairs still attached to the shower faucet from the previous guest.
- I am a fan of a nice HOT shower. The temperature control in the shower is blocked from going too far (probably to limit liability issues) so you are able to get a solid, comfortably warm shower, but it prevents it from getting hot. If you lean towards a soothing sauna-like shower this is not the right place to stay.
- The internet service in the room costs $12.95 so if you are trying to work in your room it will cost you. The internet connection was not particularly fast and often had issues staying connected. They have some type of block apparently which prevents you from connecting to the free lobby wifi while in your room. If you don't mind the constant distractions then you can work from the lobby.
- The flatscreen tv is nice until you turn it on. The picture quality is fuzzy and looks more like a 1987 projection screen than a modern flatscreen based on the poor connection/signal.
- No refrigerator in standard rooms.
- There was a serious deficiency in outlet availability. The desk work area has 1 outlet built in to the lamp, and another outlet underneath the desk if you want to crawl around on the floor. If you have multiple devices to plug-in like laptop, phone charger, iPads, etc you will struggle. I had to move the nightstand to find outlets to serve the basic needs of a business traveler.
If you are a business traveler that needs convention room meeting space this is a great option for convenience. If you are a traveler (business or leisure) that is primarily interested in a room or value then this is not the best option in the area. I checked out after my convention ended and spent the rest of my trip to Tulsa at Embassy Suites, which is only a mile away, because they offer similar basic amenities (pool, exercise room, business center, etc) but also give you larger rooms, free add-ons (wifi, made to order breakfast, happy hour reception including munchies and alcohol), and better service from the employees and they do all this at a better price point.
One factor that I should mention is that the Embassy Suites that I switched to during my stay in Tulsa is that they are doing a renovation to the lobby area so there is construction going on during the day until April. If you are going to be in the hotel all day long then that may be a factor to take under consideration, but if you are fine with a little noise until 6pm then it is still a better option than the Renaissance in my opinion...and it also has a glass elevator in case that is what you are really looking for in a hotel.
