Previous reviews of this property as being in need of a good deep-cleaning -- and preferably a full-on renovation -- are spot-on. Unfortunately, if you want to be in the area for the bike trails or other outdoor pursuits (or, apparently, kids soccer tournaments, which must be the rage here), this Ramada is pretty much the only game in town.
My partner and I stayed two nights here over Labor Day weekend September 2011 to do some hiking in Yellow Springs. From appearances, we were the only two people staying in the hotel at that time who were NOT associated with one of the aforementioned soccer tournaments. We arrived for check-in at 9pm on a Saturday night, finding the lobby overrun with unsupervised kids (literally, RUNNING) under the age of 12. The poor guy behind the front desk, frantic with activity although trying his hardest to be friendly and service-oriented, appeared to be flying solo, despite his admission that the hotel was sold-out for the night.
The room itself, although arguably one of the largest I've stayed in outside of anything with the word "suites" in it, was tired and dim, but "clean enough" for me to justify spending my Wyndham Rewards points for two nights. Trouble started within moments, however, when we realized the non-stop rumbling we kept hearing was the sound of herds of unsupervised kids running up and down the stairway which was on the other side of the wall of our end unit. With no help from the front desk guy to kibosh that activity and the thunderous noise worsening, we opened our door only to find all of the PARENTS loitering the hallway, sitting on their roll-along coolers, talking loudly and drinking beer (apparently having been booted out of the Lounge downstairs and too cheap to pony up $25 to rent one of the conference rooms). Aside from offering us a cold one, they appeared in no hurry to move the party along to another location where maybe, I don't know, people wanting to sleep wouldn't be disrupted. That’s pretty disheartening when the bad behavior of kids is outshadowed by their own parents.
The capper to the evening, however, was when we heard water trickling -- then waterfalling -- on what we thought was the other side of the connecting door to our unit, only to discover upon investigation that the water was, in fact, cascading down the doorjam in OUR bathroom from the unit overhead where kids (unsupervised, cuz their parents were out drinking) had overflowed the Jacuzzi tub. Had there been another place to move to in Xenia, I would have. But the fact was, they had us over a barrell. (A little Niagra Falls humor, if you caught it....) Front desk dude came within minutes of our call to mop it up and offer extra towels to put down on the carpeting outside the bath, which was soaked through, but we received no offer of additional renumeration. And really, what was he going to do, anyway? Pretty much the entire building was being held hostage at that point by the whims of the Collective Soccer Team.
Note to travelers: Caution on what area activities may be driving traffic to this property during the time you plan to be there. For trail enthusiasts, it really is a very convenient spot. You just don't know what you might have to put up with, however, as the "price" for that convenience.
