We just returned from this hotel hours ago. So, this review is very FRESH!
We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights while our 13 year old son played in a baseball tournament. We booked a block of 2 Queen Non-Smoking rooms for $81.30 per night, including fees and taxes, for the whole team.
We are experienced travelers, traveling twice a year for family vacations, and those are destination trips, like Disney and Cruises. We have never stayed at an AmeriHost before, but we were't expecting a Disney or Cruise level expereince, just a clean, comfortable property with good customer service.
The hotel is being changed over to a Best Western and is therefore ungoing what looks to be a major renovation as a result. I suspect, but did not confirm, that the hotel is also under new ownership.
The exterior of the property looks ok, nothing spectacular, just solid and maintained. All the windows could use a washing - in and out. The exterior doors must be opened using a card key, we had perpetual issues with our keys not working in the rear door closest to our room, but they would work in another rear door just fine.
Throughout the interior (lobby, halls, stairwells, rooms) the carpet could use a good cleaning or replacement. The ceramic tile in the stairways and bathrooms has been recently installed and looks nice. The wallpaper isn't peeling, but could use to be replaced. That may be planned as I noticed that it appears a wallpaper border has been removed already.
The lobby counter is in good shape and so are the breakfast counters. The breakfast area tables and chairs are in good shape as well. But space is limited if the hotel is running at full capcity.
The rooms are average sized. There are 2 queen beds, a nightstand, a desk and chair, and a dresser/tv stand. All the wood furnishings appear to be new. There is also a small microwave and frig incorporated into the dresser/tv stand unit. The soft goods are not new, the sheets and blankets were in ok shape, but the pillows, bedspreads, and draperies have seen better days. Hopefully they are being replced in the renovations. The bathroom in our room was clean and included the new ceramic floor. The bathtub itself should be replaced as it was patched and the was ground in dirt in the textured surface of it. I could tell it was clean, but it looked dirty because the dirt was ground into the non-slip texture. The shower curtain was clean and fresh. The wallpaper and carpet issues I mentioned above pertain to the room and bathroom as well. One final issue with the room/bathroom - towels! We had 3 occupants in our room and we got 3 bath towels, 2 hand towels, and 2 wash clothes each day. Another family in our block had 4 occupants and only got 2 of each. When we inquired about the quantity, we were told they were short on towels. I feel that a hotel should have enough towels to cover their capacity times two. Which I know was not the case and I suspect that they took the towels out of the room in the moring and washed and dried them and them put them back in the rooms, as we returned to the room a couple of days in the middle of the day and while our rooms were made up, there were no new towels, yet when we came back later that same day, there were new ones then. Also, some of the towels had stains and/or were threadbare. They are hopefully investing in new towels as part of the renovation.
The free continental breakfast was lacking in our opinion. There is limited space to set up, but better choices could be made. They have indivdual Kellogg cereal bowls (Foot Loops, Pops, Frosted Flakes, Raisin Bran & Frosted Mini-Wheats), Quaker Instant Oatmeal Packets of multiple flavors, bagels, and english muffins. They also have apples and oranges. And gallons of milk are located in a small frig under the counter. They also had prepared scrambled eggs folds and frozen sausage that you could microwave in the micro located on the counter. Personally, I wouldn't touch eggs that had been pre-prepared and left sitting around in a tupperware container and I wouldn't nuke frozen sausage. I would have prefered to have individual yougurts in multiple flavors and a larger selection fo fresh fruit in place of the eggs and sausage. Also, because there is limited space to set the breakfast up, with being at capacity, items ram out and you had to wait for refills. There is also orange and apple juice available, as well as coffe and tea.
The pool area is nice and is pretty clean. We have an inground pool at home, so I am pretty picky about water condition and it met my needs. The spa tub was also in good shape. There is an issue with pool towels. They supply seperate pool towels in the pool area and there are bins where they should be located. There were some there the first day, but every day after that we had to ask at the front desk to have some brought in before we entered the pool or spa. They would bring in a limited number at that point. In talking to a worked about why towels weren't stocked in the bins, I was told the owner was worried about theft of the towels and that's hwy they were being limited. We are talking threadbare towels witha big strip down the middle of them. Who is going to steal those. Again, I'm hoping new pool towels are included in the renovation. But more importantly, I'm hoping the owners' attitudes about theft are renovated.
Finally, I have to talk about Customer Service. Rachel and Ann who work the fornt desk are wonderful and the owners do not deserve to have such wonderful employees. The housekeeping staff is doing a remarkable job given the conditions they are operating under, as they have no carts and I suspect they are doing the laundry while simultaneously making up/flipping the rooms. The owners are a different story! The woman owner comes across as being threatened by everyone in the place. One person in our party discovered he had lost his credit card a couple of days into our stay. He started to retrace his steps and stopped at the front desk to inquire if he had left it there during check-in, the woman owner immediately got defense and assumed he was accusing her of stealing it, and got into an exchange with him over it. She did this in front of all of us standing in the lobby getting ready to head out for the day. I also heard her arguing with one of our boys about replacing his key card, because she was having to replace "so many". They weren't being lost, they were failing to operate properly. And she was worried about the cost of the cards. I only saw the male owner once and he was stingy with the pool towels. That was my only interaction with him.
Bottomline, I am guessing the property will be nice once the renovations are complete, but unfortnately I don't think the owners' attitudes will be renovated.
I will not stay here again.
